A connected handheld thickness gauge for corrosion surveys and precision measurement

The Evident 39DL PLUS is a handheld ultrasonic thickness gauge that Evident describes as working as either a precision or a corrosion thickness gauge. It combines a 60 Hz display update rate for scanning for minimum thickness, a built-in data logger, and integrated Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, USB, RS-232 and removable microSD for moving data. With dual element transducers it measures the remaining wall of pipes, tanks, vessels and hulls affected by corrosion, and with single element transducers it measures metals, plastics, composites, glass and ceramics. The housing is designed for IP67 and weighs 0.83 kg (1.83 lb).

Software options and transducers

For corrosion work the gauge supports automatic probe recognition for standard D79X dual element transducers, ten custom dual element setups, THRU-COAT on D7906-SM, D7906-RM and D7908 transducers to measure metal and coating without removing paint, and high-temperature measurement up to 500 C (932 F). Evident lists replaceable delay lines DLH-1, DLH-2 and DLH-3 for single element work. A standard package includes the gauge, charger, data logger, GageView software, test block and couplant, USB cable, rubber boot with stand and manual; contents vary by region.

Selection and use

Choose dual element transducers for internally corroded steel, single element transducers for precision work on thin or non-metallic parts, and add only the software options the job needs, since they are code-activated. Confirm that the transducer connector style matches the gauge and that the part number of the options matches the instrument supplied. How the Evident 39DL PLUS works

The gauge sends a short ultrasonic pulse into the material through a transducer and measures the time that the echo takes to return. It multiplies half of that time by the sound velocity of the material to give the thickness. With a dual element transducer, one element sends and the other receives, which suits corroded surfaces. THRU-COAT and Thru-Paint modes let the gauge measure the metal through a coating without removing it. The result shows on a colour display and can be saved in the data logger.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes

Set the sound velocity for the material, and calibrate the gauge on a block of known thickness before measuring. Apply couplant to the surface and press the transducer flat. Clean the surface of loose rust and scale. Name the files and the locations before the survey, so that the readings are easy to find later. Keep the transducer cables in good condition, and charge the battery before field use.

The logger holds 792,832 thickness readings or 20,000 waveforms. File names can have 32 characters and the ID can have 20 characters.

The gauge has USB 3.0, RS-232, VGA output, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a microSD slot for cards up to 32 GB.
