About Globe Valves

Bellows sealed stop valves and other globe valve types listed
The Spirax Sarco BSA and BSAT families are the core of the listing. In a bellows sealed valve, a metal bellows around the stem forms the primary stem seal, so the fluid does not reach the gland packing in normal operation. The packing remains as a secondary seal. This is why the type is preferred on steam and on fluids where stem leakage is a safety or housekeeping problem. The listing also includes the BSA3HP for higher pressure duty, the A3S and A3SS, the BSA3BD and the DBB3 double block and bleed valve. This is a small category and it is growing; other globe valve models and sizes can be sourced on request.
Selecting a globe valve: the points that matter
Size the valve to the line and check the pressure drop if the valve will be used partly open. Body material has to suit the fluid and the design pressure and temperature; cast iron, SG iron, carbon steel and stainless steel are the common options. Pressure rating and flange standard must agree with the piping class, either EN PN ratings or ASME classes. The disc design also matters. A throttling or regulating disc is a different trim from a plain isolation disc, and a soft-seated disc gives tighter shut-off than a metal seat within its temperature limit. Most globe valves have a marked flow direction that must be respected.

What is the advantage of a bellows sealed globe valve over a packed gland valve?
The bellows gives a metal barrier between the fluid and the atmosphere along the stem, so there is no stem leakage to tighten up and no steam wisping from the gland. That reduces energy loss and maintenance on steam systems and improves safety on hazardous fluids. The gland packing is still fitted as a back-up should the bellows fail.
Can a stop valve be used for throttling?
A standard isolation disc is meant to be fully open or fully closed. Holding it just off the seat for long periods causes wire-drawing of the seat and noise. If you need to regulate flow by hand, ask for the throttling or regulating disc version of the valve. For automatic control, a control valve with actuator and positioner is the correct choice.
What is the difference between a globe valve and a gate valve?
A gate valve gives a straight, full-bore path with very low pressure drop and is used fully open or fully closed. A globe valve turns the flow through the seat, so it has more pressure drop, but it seats tightly, opens with a short stroke and tolerates frequent operation. For steam isolation on small and medium lines the globe pattern is the common choice.
What is a double block and bleed valve used for?
Double block and bleed isolation places two closed valves in series with an open bleed between them. Any leakage past the first valve is drained or vented at the bleed instead of reaching the downstream side. It is used to isolate equipment for maintenance on steam and other hazardous fluids. A combined unit such as the DBB3 saves space and joints compared with three separate valves.
Which certificates can be supplied with a globe valve?
On request we provide the manufacturer's datasheet and the documents the manufacturer issues for the valve, typically a material certificate to EN 10204 for the pressure-containing parts and a pressure test report. State the certificate type, for example 3.1, in the inquiry, because it normally has to be ordered together with the valve and cannot always be issued afterwards.
