Brand:

Cortem EV Ex d Luminaires for Traditional and LED Lamps

Description

Ex d lamp luminaires for LED, halogen and fluorescent lamps in refineries and offshore plants

The Cortem EV series are flameproof lighting fixtures for traditional and LED lamps, designed for the petrochemical and oil-refining industries. Low-copper aluminium alloy, shockproof borosilicate glass and electro-polished stainless steel parts suit corrosive atmospheres, salt and industrial pollution. Ceramic lamp holders with high heat resistance and acid-proof neoprene gaskets give a long working life with little maintenance, and with IP66 protection the globe can be cleaned safely with a wet cloth.

The datasheet reminds installers that, under EN/IEC 60079-14, entry to the fixture must be only through an Ex barrier cable gland or, with conduit, through EYS or EZS sealing fittings. The guard can be omitted on request because the luminaire passed the 4 joule glass breakage test.

Accessories and what to confirm before ordering

Accessories listed include LED lamps (E27 8 W LAMPLED8W and 12 W LAMPLED12W), an external reflector, NAV2NB (armoured) or NAVB2NB (unarmoured) cable glands, G-0513 warning signs, emergency exit sign options, a different rated voltage and a U-bolt for pole mounting. The lamp is not part of the fixture and must be ordered with it.

Confirm the mounting style, lamp type and wattage against the temperature class needed for the gas, the supply voltage, whether the stainless guard is needed and the cable gland type.

Key design features

  • Flameproof Ex d enclosure for IIC gas groups, the most demanding group that includes hydrogen and acetylene, plus Ex tb dust protection for IIIC.
  • One fixture accepts traditional lamps or LED lamps on E27 or E40 ceramic holders, so a site can move to LED without changing the certified housing.
  • Borosilicate glass globe with a 4 J impact test result, which allows the guard to be omitted on request.
  • Low-copper aluminium body with polyester coating and stainless steel external parts for corrosive and saline air.
  • Silicone gaskets resistant to acids and hydrocarbons, and IP66 sealing for hose-down and wet-cloth cleaning.

Choosing the lamp and temperature class

In a flameproof luminaire, the temperature class (T-rating) depends on the lamp type and wattage installed. A higher-wattage lamp produces more heat and gives a less favourable T-class. The installed lamp must therefore never exceed the wattage shown on the marking plate for the required T-class. When converting existing fixtures to LED, the LED lamp should fall within the lamp type and wattage covered by the certificate; the lower heat output of LED usually helps, but compliance comes from the marking, not from assumptions.

The area classification drawing for the plant defines the zone, gas group and temperature class needed at each location. Matching those three items to the luminaire marking is the first selection step, before thinking about light output.

Installation requirements

  • Use certified Ex d barrier cable glands or, for conduit systems, EYS or EZS sealing fittings, as noted in the datasheet under EN/IEC 60079-14.
  • Close unused entries with certified Ex d stopping plugs.
  • Do not modify flame paths; keep joint surfaces clean and lightly protected against corrosion with a suitable non-setting grease where permitted by the instructions.
  • Isolate the supply before opening the luminaire in a hazardous area, and follow the site permit-to-work system.
  • Earth the body using the internal and external earthing points.

Inspection and maintenance

IEC 60079-17 calls for initial, periodic and sample inspections of Ex equipment. For lamp luminaires, inspectors typically look at the glass for cracks, the gaskets for hardening, the lamp rating against the plate, cable gland integrity and corrosion on threads and fasteners. Replacing gaskets and lamps with the manufacturer’s parts keeps the certification valid.

Use in Oman and GCC hydrocarbon facilities

Refineries, gas processing plants, tank farms and offshore platforms in the region combine hazardous areas with high ambient temperatures, sand and salt-laden air. The upper ambient limit of +60 °C covers most outdoor GCC locations, though fixtures in direct sun or near hot equipment should be checked against the model-specific ambient class. Corrosion-resistant materials and IP66 sealing help in coastal and offshore installations.
