Banner Q4X Rugged Stainless Steel Laser Distance Sensor

Description

Overview

The Banner Q4X is a Class 1 laser CMOS distance sensor built into a rugged FDA-grade 316L stainless steel housing. Banner Engineering designed it as a problem solver for detection tasks that defeat ordinary photoelectric sensors: black foam on black plastic, black rubber in front of metal, multicolour packaging, shiny metal parts and transparent containers. Instead of relying on reflected light intensity alone, the sensor measures the distance to the target, so presence, absence and position can be confirmed regardless of colour or surface finish.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Banner Q4X to packaging lines, bottling plants, food processing facilities and assembly operations across Oman and the GCC. Our team in Muscat helps engineers choose the right range, housing and output, and provides engineering support for projects in Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa and Salalah.

Operating Principle

The Banner Q4X projects a small, highly visible 655 nm red laser spot onto the target and images the returned light on a CMOS receiver. Because the position of the returned spot on the receiver changes with distance, the sensor calculates the distance to the target by triangulation and shows it in millimetres on its display. Dynamically adjusted laser power raises the output for dark targets or objects at steep angles and reduces it for shiny surfaces, which keeps measurements stable across a wide range of challenging materials. The design is temperature compensated, and Banner recommends a ten-minute warm-up for optimum performance.

Several TEACH modes turn the distance reading into a switching decision: two-point static background suppression, dynamic background suppression, one-point window (foreground suppression), one-point background suppression and the dual mode. In dual mode the Banner Q4X learns a reference surface using both distance and received intensity, so any change in either value switches the output. This is how the sensor detects clear bottles, film and other transparent objects without a retroreflector, and how it confirms that a part is present and correctly oriented.

Engineering Design of the Banner Q4X

The Banner Q4X housing is machined from 316L stainless steel with a PMMA acrylic lens cover and a polysulfone lightpipe and display window. It resists mechanical impact, over-tightening and extreme vibration, and the laser-marked information survives aggressive washdown. The materials are ECOLAB certified and compatible with common acidic and caustic cleaning chemicals as well as typical cutting and lubricating fluids, which suits food, beverage and machining environments.

Two mechanical styles are available. Threaded barrel models use an industry-standard 18 mm barrel for quick installation, a bipolar output (one PNP and one NPN) and an integral 5-pin M12 connector. Flush mount models offer a flat face for hygienic food and beverage machinery, a PNP or NPN output and an integral 4-pin M12 connector. Setup takes place through three tactile buttons below the angled four-digit, seven-segment display, which can be read from several vantage points, and the remote input wire allows teaching, laser enable and button lockout from a PLC.

Key Features

The Banner Q4X brings the following capabilities to a production line:

  • Reliable detection of dark, shiny, multicolour and transparent targets using distance-based measurement rather than simple contrast.
  • Sensing ranges of 25 to 100 mm, 25 to 300 mm and 25 to 500 mm for threaded barrel models, and 35 to 110 mm or 35 to 310 mm for flush mount models.
  • Dual intensity and distance mode that detects clear objects and subtle surface changes without a reflector.
  • User-selectable response speeds of 1.5, 3, 10, 25 or 50 milliseconds to balance speed against excess gain.
  • Angled four-digit display with submillimetre resolution and a bright amber output indicator visible from a distance.
  • 316L stainless steel housing rated IP67 and IP68 per IEC 60529 and IP69K per ISO 20653 when a suitable cordset is installed.
  • Strong ambient light immunity of more than 5,000 lux at 300 mm, which prevents nuisance trips under changing lighting.
  • Remote input for remote teaching, laser enable and factory reset, plus master and slave synchronisation between sensors.

Industrial Applications

Bottling and beverage plants use the Banner Q4X to regulate the flow of bottles on conveyors and to detect accumulation of clear PET containers, where variations in shape, colour and transparency confuse conventional sensors. Food factories use flush mount versions in washdown areas, and pharmaceutical packaging lines rely on the analog family for fill-level checks. In assembly cells the sensor verifies that small spacers, gaskets and fasteners are present and seated before the next process step, a typical error-proofing task for automotive and electronics suppliers.

In Oman, these applications appear at beverage and dairy producers, plastics and packaging converters in the Rusayl and Sohar industrial estates, and logistics hubs serving the GCC. Seven Star LLC supplies the Banner Q4X as a trusted supplier for these sites and supports engineers who are standardising on one rugged sensor to reduce spare-part inventory. Process customers can combine it with instruments such as the Magnetrol Eclipse 706 guided wave radar level transmitter, the Vaisala DMT152 dew point transmitter and the Setra 209 pressure transducer.

About brand
Banner Engineering, founded in 1966 in Minneapolis, USA, makes industrial sensors, indicator lights and machine safety products that show up on packaging lines and conveyors everywhere. Seven Star LLC lists two Banner devices, the Q4X rugged stainless steel laser distance sensor and the K50 Pro Beacon IO-Link multicolor RGB indicator, and supplies Banner sensors and indicators to plants and machine builders in Oman.

Banner Q4X and K50 Pro

Banner offers the Q4X in four range versions, all starting at 25 mm: Q4X100 to 100 mm, Q4X300 to 300 mm, Q4X500 to 500 mm and Q4X600 to 600 mm. The series is available with discrete, analog and IO-Link outputs and has a display on the sensor. The K50 Pro Beacon is a status indicator whose color and behavior are set from the controller over IO-Link.

Ordering Banner products: what we need

Send the complete Banner model number from the device label, because range, output type and connector are all coded into it. For the Q4X, state the measuring distance, the output your PLC input needs and the connector or cable style. For indicators, give the housing size, control method and voltage. Mating cordsets and brackets can be included for GCC orders.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Banner Q4X detect clear bottles without a reflector?
In dual mode the Banner Q4X learns a reference background using both distance and received light intensity. A transparent bottle passing in front of that background changes at least one of the two values, so the output switches reliably without a retroreflector or special alignment.
Is the Banner Q4X suitable for washdown areas in food and beverage plants?
Yes. The housing is FDA-grade 316L stainless steel with ECOLAB certified materials and is rated IP67, IP68 and IP69K when a suitable cordset is fitted. Flush mount models also provide a flat face that is easier to clean.
Which Banner Q4X range should I choose?
Threaded barrel models cover 25 to 100 mm, 25 to 300 mm or 25 to 500 mm, while flush mount models cover 35 to 110 mm or 35 to 310 mm. Shorter-range models give finer repeatability and smaller minimum object separation, so choose the shortest range that fits the mounting distance.
Can the Banner Q4X be taught remotely from a PLC?
The remote input wire can trigger a TEACH, select the TEACH mode, enable or disable the laser and reset the sensor to factory defaults. The buttons can also be locked so operators cannot change the settings on the line.
Does Seven Star LLC supply the Banner Q4X in Oman?
Seven Star LLC supplies Banner Q4X sensors and their M12 cordsets to customers in Oman and across the GCC. Our Muscat team provides application support and the Banner documentation for each order.
