Banner SI-RF Non-Contact RF Safety Switch, Cat 4 PL e

Description

The Banner SI-RF is a non-contact radio-frequency safety switch for monitoring the position of gates, doors, covers and guards on machine cells, conveyors and packaging lines. A coded actuator mounted on the guard is read by the sensor through an electronic field, so the switch has no moving parts and tolerates misalignment better than mechanical limit switches.

One SI-RF switch meets Category 4, PL e and SIL CL 3 on its own, and up to 32 switches can be wired in series. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, quotes SI-RF sensors and actuators by exact model code from the Banner product manual.

Reading the model table

The manual groups sensors by connection and diagnostics. SI-RFST and SI-RFSL are series PNP sensors with automatic or manual reset; SI-RFDT and SI-RFDL add In-Series Diagnostics; SI-RFPT models are single PNP sensors with 2 m cable or a 5-pin pigtail. The last letter before the connector code sets the coding level: L for low, H for high and U for unique. A basic system needs a sensor, an actuator (SI-RF-A or low-profile SI-RF-A2), a cable and a safety monitoring device.

Choosing the coding level

The manual offers low, high and unique coded sensors; choose the coding level that matches how strictly each sensor must be paired with its actuator, and confirm the details in the manual. The manual notes that the SI-RF is designed for non-locking guarding applications unless another means of locking is provided; for guard locking see the Banner SI-LS42 and SI-GL42 families. Series strings use the redundant inputs and outputs, and the last switch in the string ties its inputs to +24 V DC.

Installation and what to confirm

The sensing distances apply only with the SI-RF-A actuator and require non-flush mounting on metal; multiple units need at least 100 mm spacing, as the manual states. Mount the sensor and actuator with M4 hardware through the 4.5 mm holes and use permanent fasteners. Browse the safety switches and guard locking category for related devices. Please confirm before ordering: coding level, connector type, ISD need, reset mode, cable length and the safety controller or relay.

How the Banner SI-RF works

The sensor sends a low-power radio field and the coded actuator on the guard answers with its code. The sensor accepts the code only when the actuator is within range. When the guard opens, the actuator moves away and the safety outputs switch off. No contact is needed between the two parts.

Where the SI-RF is used

  • Machine cell gates
  • Access doors on conveyors
  • Packaging line guards
  • Covers and hatches
  • Washdown areas

Selection checklist for the SI-RF

  • Coding level, low, high or unique
  • Series or single connection
  • Diagnostic need
  • Actuator style
  • Connector type
  • Cable length
  • Reset mode
  • Ambient temperature

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the SI-RF

Mount the sensor and the actuator on the frame and the guard. Align them within the sensing distance. Connect the cable to the safety controller. Test that the outputs drop when the guard opens. Check the fixings at set intervals.

About brand

Banner Engineering, founded in 1966 in Minneapolis, USA, makes industrial sensors, indicator lights and machine safety products that show up on packaging lines and conveyors everywhere. Seven Star LLC lists Banner devices including the Q4X rugged stainless steel laser distance sensor and the K50 Pro Beacon IO-Link multicolor RGB indicator, and supplies Banner sensors and indicators to plants and machine builders in Oman.

Banner Q4X and K50 Pro

Banner offers the Q4X in four range versions, all starting at 25 mm: Q4X100 to 100 mm, Q4X300 to 300 mm, Q4X500 to 500 mm and Q4X600 to 600 mm. The series is available with discrete, analog and IO-Link outputs and has a display on the sensor. The K50 Pro Beacon is a status indicator whose color and behavior are set from the controller over IO-Link.

Ordering Banner products: what we need

Send the complete Banner model number from the device label, because range, output type and connector are all coded into it. For the Q4X, state the measuring distance, the output your PLC input needs and the connector or cable style. For indicators, give the housing size, control method and voltage. Mating cordsets and brackets can be included for GCC orders.
