How to select an industrial Ethernet switch
Decide first if the switch must be managed. Managed switches support VLANs, ring redundancy, port diagnostics and SNMP, and are needed for any network with redundant paths or with PROFINET and EtherNet/IP diagnostics. Unmanaged switches suit small machine networks. Then fix the port count and type, copper speed, fiber type and connector, PoE budget, supply voltage and redundancy of the power input, the mounting style and the operating temperature range. For outdoor cabinets in Gulf climates the temperature rating deserves a careful look. Hazardous-area or substation use adds further approvals, for example IEC 61850-3 for substations.

When do I need a managed switch instead of an unmanaged one?
Use a managed switch when the network has a ring or other redundant path, when traffic must be separated into VLANs, when you need port mirroring and diagnostics, or when the automation protocol expects the switch to appear as a device in the PLC project. Unmanaged switches simply forward frames and are adequate for a small, flat machine network with no redundancy.
What does EN 50155 mean on an Ethernet switch?
EN 50155 is the European standard for electronic equipment on railway vehicles. It sets requirements for supply voltage variation, temperature classes, shock and vibration, and electromagnetic compatibility. Switches built to it normally use M12 screw-locking connectors instead of RJ45. The same properties make them a common choice for vehicles, mobile machinery and other locations with continuous vibration.
How do I choose an industrial cellular router for a remote site?
Check the frequency bands and technology (4G or 5G) supported by the mobile operator at the site, the number of SIM slots for operator failover, the VPN protocols your IT department accepts, and the local interfaces: Ethernet ports, serial ports for Modbus RTU devices, and digital I/O. Then confirm supply voltage, antenna connectors and operating temperature for the cabinet where it will sit.
Can a Siemens SCALANCE switch be replaced without reconfiguring it?
If the old switch used a removable storage medium, its configuration is stored there and can be moved to a replacement of the same type, which then takes over the settings on power-up. The replacement must be a compatible model and firmware. Without the medium, the configuration has to be loaded from a saved file or re-entered. What information is needed to quote a network switch or router?
The manufacturer part number if known.
