Lantronix SGX5150122ES SGX 5150 Wireless IoT Device Gateway

Description

Wi-Fi, Ethernet and a serial port in one FIPS-ready gateway

The Lantronix SGX5150122ES is the Europe and worldwide version of the SGX 5150 IoT device gateway with one RJ45 RS-232 serial port, USB, a 10/100 Ethernet port and 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac wireless. It is built to connect business-critical assets, such as industrial machines, weighing scales, automation controllers and medical or clinical devices, securely to an enterprise network. The manufacturer calls it a turnkey design: the unit boots, joins the network and tunnels serial data without custom firmware.

Beyond tunneling, the gateway runs a Linux-based platform for custom applications through the Yocto SDK, with Python and Java runtime services listed in the bulletin for quicker development. Security is handled by the InfiniShield suite, which includes secure boot, secure firmware update, secure communications, data-at-rest protection and role-based access control; the product bulletin states FIPS 140-2 Level 1 certification and Microsoft Azure certification. The bulletin also lists UAE (TRA) among the certifications.

How the SGX 5150 order codes work

The manufacturer page lists the SGX 5150 by feature digits and region suffix. The codes 5150122, 5150123, 5150222 and 5150225 combine one or two serial ports and optional PoE or RS-485, and the suffixes US and ES mark the North American and the Europe and worldwide versions. SGX5150122ES is the single RS-232 version without PoE for Europe and worldwide; SGX5150123ES adds PoE and SGX5150222ES has two RS-232 ports. The bulletin also describes SGX 5150 MD (medical) and SGX 5150 XL (extra storage) variants, which are separate codes.

Accessories in the bulletin are the SGX5150BKT mounting bracket, 520-154-R and 520-141-R power supplies, a 500-247-R USB Type C cable, a Cat5E patch cable and RJ45 to DB9 serial cables or adapters (500-101, 200.2071). Note that the supply list names optional supplies; the standard input is the 9-30 VDC barrel jack. See the industrial communications category for other gateways.

Installation and operating notes

Mount the gateway flat on a horizontal or vertical surface using the supplied brackets. Connect the RJ45 serial cable, the Ethernet cable and the power source, then configure it through the web manager, CLI or DeviceInstaller. Wi-Fi Protected Setup lets the gateway join a router or access point in one step: hold the WPS button for at least five seconds. A recessed reset button restores factory defaults when held for six seconds. The unit can bridge Ethernet to Wi-Fi in a single-host mode and includes a built-in site survey tool for choosing a channel.

The 5 GHz channel plan in the bulletin lists U-NII-1, U-NII-2, U-NII-2e and U-NII-3 channel groups, and local regulatory limits decide which of these may be used in a given country; confirm with the radio regulator. Because the housing is IP20 aluminium, use a dry indoor location or an enclosure. The -40 to +70 C range covers unconditioned panels in warm regions as long as the real internal temperature stays within it.

Typical uses

The bulletin names energy, cities, medical, industrial, retail and transportation markets, and the user guide lists weighing scales, automation controllers, asset and warehouse management, mobile HMI and instrumentation, and clinical information system integration. Pair it with serial instruments that have no Ethernet port, or use the Linux SDK to run local data collection and forward results to Azure or another cloud service.
