A plug-and-play Gigabit switch with fibre uplinks

The NE11008-00832A is an industrial unmanaged switch with eight 10/100/1000 Mbps adaptive RJ45 ports and two 1000 Mbps SFP slots. It needs no configuration: each copper port auto-senses MDI/MDIX and forwards at wire speed, and the unit uses store-and-forward switching. Winsonic lists it as PM110GSI V1 Industrial Switch in the datasheet header.

The housing is fanless full-aluminium with roof groove heat conduction and is rated -40 to 75 degrees C. It is a straightforward way to extend an Ethernet segment from a control cabinet with a fibre backhaul.

With no software to configure, the unit is useful where maintenance staff have no networking background. Each RJ45 port negotiates speed and cable polarity by itself, the SFP slots accept Gigabit modules, and the panel shows power and link activity. The 20 Gbps switching capacity is non-blocking for eight Gigabit ports, and the jumbo frame limit of 9216 bytes helps transfers that use large frames.

The datasheet also mentions automatic detection of PD devices, which is a feature note for the family; this model is non-PoE and its supply is 12 to 55 V DC only.

When to choose the unmanaged model

Select NE11008-00832A when you need no ring protocol, SNMP or VLAN design: machine-line cabinets, small CCTV aggregation points and temporary links. Use the managed NE11004-20834A for ring redundancy with the same eight-plus-fibre layout, or the PoE unmanaged NE11007-00842A for powered devices.

Verify the SFP transceiver type for your fibre run, as 1000BASE-X media is multimode or single-mode according to the datasheet. Only a DC supply is needed.

Because it is unmanaged, loops must be avoided in the cabling, as the unit offers no spanning tree. If a ring or redundant path is needed, move to a managed model. Installation is simple: mount on DIN rail or wall, connect the DC supply within 12 to 55 V, patch the devices and fibre, and check the LEDs. The datasheet gives the MAC table as 4K entries, which is enough for small segments but should be considered when connecting very large numbers of devices behind routers or wireless bridges.

The operating range of -40 to 75 degrees C and the fanless aluminium body suit enclosed cabinets without ventilation. Surge protection of 2 kV differential and 4 kV common mode applies to the data ports according to the datasheet. Always follow local electrical codes for earthing and wiring of the DC supply.

For mixed networks, this unit can sit below a managed switch in the same cabinet, acting as a simple port extender: the managed unit enforces VLANs and ring protection while the unmanaged unit adds extra copper ports at low cost.
