MikroTik CRS310-1G-5S-4S+IN 10G SFP+ Switch

Description

An indoor fibre switch with five SFP and four SFP+ ports

The CRS310-1G-5S-4S+IN is a fibre switch with five 1G SFP ports, four 10G SFP+ ports and one gigabit Ethernet port. MikroTik calls it an indoor variation of its netFiber 9 switch, suited to small offices and small or medium ISPs, and a direct upgrade path for existing CRS212 setups.

It uses an ARM 32-bit CPU at 800 MHz with 2 cores, 256 MB RAM and 16 MB flash, plus a Marvell 98DX226S switch chip. The Ethernet port connects directly to the switch chip at full gigabit speed and accepts PoE-in, giving a second power option when the DC jack is not reachable.

Manufacturer test figures (98DX226 all port test), made to RFC2544 with Xena tooling:

Test Rules Mbps at 1518 B Mbps at 512 B Mbps at 64 B
Bridging none (fast path) 1264.2 487.8 72.2
Routing none (fast path) 1264.2 531.3 73.5
Routing 25 ip filter rules 535.6 186.8 24.8

Reading the numbers: the nine fibre ports add up to 45 Gbps (derived: 5 x 1G plus 4 x 10G), plus the gigabit copper port. Hardware-offloaded VLAN filtering keeps this traffic out of the CPU. The table shows what the CPU itself can route: 1264.2 Mbps in the fast path at 1518 bytes, 535.6 Mbps with 25 IP filter rules, and 24.8 Mbps at 64 bytes with those rules. Use the switch as a Layer 2 aggregation device and let a router handle heavy Layer 3 work. Idle consumption is 8 W and the maximum is 20 W, so a single PoE-in feed or the adapter is enough.

Switch chip, ports and power

  • 5 x SFP, 4 x SFP+ and 1 x 10/100/1000 Ethernet port; RJ45 serial console.
  • Hardware-offloaded VLAN filtering and some hardware-offloaded Layer 3 routing.
  • RouterOS v7 or SwOS; datasheet states 100-120 percent faster than the CRS212.
  • Two DC inputs: DC jack and PoE-in, 18-57 V; 8 W idle and 20 W maximum.
  • Tested ambient range -40 to 70 degrees C on the page; one fan; fits standard 1U rack with the supplied rack ears.

Order code and rack notes

The code CRS310-1G-5S-4S+IN reads: 1G = one gigabit copper port, 5S = five SFP, 4S+ = four SFP+, IN = indoor. The package includes a 24 V 1.2 A power adapter, a fastening set and rack ears. The datasheet lists the case as 200 x 166 x 45 mm. SFP and SFP+ modules are separate; select single-mode or multi-mode optics by link distance.

Installation and powering

Mount with the ears in a rack or on a shelf, then power it from the adapter or from a PoE source in the 18-57 V range. For configuration, MikroTik uses the same procedure as its other switches: a browser or WinBox at 192.168.88.1, user admin, no default password. MikroTik points out that fibre is a useful alternative to copper where electromagnetic interference, tampering or eavesdropping are concerns.

Fibre links in small offices and ISP sites

The switch suits building-to-building fibre aggregation, ISP access nodes, and campus uplinks over distances beyond 100 m of copper. Its ratings are for indoor use; in a hot equipment cabinet confirm the internal temperature against the 70 degrees C tested limit, which is a derived guideline rather than a continuous rating.

Information to send with an RFQ for the MikroTik CRS310-1G-5S-4S+IN 10G SFP+ Switch

Switch selection depends on how many devices connect, how they are powered and how the switch links back to the core. For the MikroTik CRS310-1G-5S-4S+IN 10G SFP+ Switch, list the number of copper and fibre ports you need, the PoE devices it will feed (cameras, access points, phones) and their individual power class, so the total PoE budget can be checked against the switch’s limit.

  • Uplink speed and media: 1G, 2.5G or 10G, copper or SFP/SFP+, and the optic modules required.
  • Management needs: VLANs, link aggregation, IGMP snooping, or central management from a controller.
  • Rack space, airflow direction and power redundancy in the cabinet.
  • Ambient temperature in the room or field cabinet, which matters in GCC summers.

A simple port map of the site is enough for the configuration to be checked before the order is confirmed.

About brand

MikroTik is a Latvian maker of networking hardware and software, founded on 14 March 1996 in Riga by John Tully and Arnis Riekstiņš to develop routers and wireless ISP systems. In 1997 it created the RouterOS operating system for standard PC hardware, and in 2002 it began making its own hardware under the RouterBOARD brand. MikroTik is still privately owned by its two founders.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list MikroTik devices, each with the manufacturer datasheet, for ISPs, IT contractors and site networks in Oman and the GCC.
