OMNI 4000/7000 Series

Description

Overview

The OMNI 4000/7000 flow computer series is a trusted solution for pipeline and custody transfer systems. It combines decades of metering experience and delivers primary liquid and/or gas US customary and metric calculations in a single program.

The Series parallels the popular OMNI 3000/6000, providing the same reliability and project lifecycle performance, and is ideal for pipeline systems and critical infrastructure projects where cyber-security and programming control are core requirements.

Engineering & Design

Every OMNI built in the last 25 years is factory-programmed and user-configurable, with program testing prior to factory release that exceeds project-oriented customized programmable devices. Only OMNI provides secure factory programming, testing, and verification; only field configuration is required to install, operate, and maintain the flow computer.

With full programming traceability from factory to operation, the OMNI 4000/7000 is the only flow computer to have received the European MID/WELMEC WG7.2 issue 6 extension D approval, meaning programming modifications and upgrades after factory release are controlled and traceable in accordance with metrology regulations. OMNI is an assurance partner for your Management of Change.

Custody transfer metering demands certified measurement, and the OMNI 4000/7000 flow computer provides it, which is why Seven Star LLC supplies the OMNI 4000/7000 flow computer for pipeline projects.

For custody transfer, the OMNI 4000/7000 flow computer is a widely approved instrument. Seven Star LLC supplies it factory programmed, with project documentation.

The OMNI 4000/7000 flow computer calculates the flow of the gas and the liquid with the AGA and the API standards from the raw transmitter values. The unit is mounted in the panel and the inputs are wired to the pressure, the temperature and the differential transmitters of the metering skid. The calculated values are stored in the audit trail and are output to the SCADA over the serial link.

OMNI 4000 vs OMNI 7000: Slots, I/O Modules and Communication Ports

Both models run the same firmware and support six meter runs, each of which can be set independently for liquid or gas. The hardware difference is capacity: the OMNI 4000 motherboard has 4 I/O module slots and 4 back-panel terminal blocks, the OMNI 7000 has 10 of each, and the 7000 chassis is 413 mm deep behind the panel against 241 mm for the 4000. Both share a 210 × 121 mm panel cutout, a 4.3 inch 800 × 480 colour display and a 25-key keypad.

Process signals enter through combo modules. Types A, B, E and E/D accept 4-20 mA, 1-5 V and four-wire 100 Ω RTD inputs together with flow pulses or densitometer frequency, and provide one or two 4-20 mA outputs. Only the E module offers Level A pulse fidelity and double-chronometry proving. Analog inputs have 14-bit resolution and an accuracy of ±0.025% of reading ±2 counts from -10 to +55 °C. HART modules provide 4 networks each, and a digital multiplexer module adds 10 channels for prover, sampler and status signals.

Every unit includes a dual Ethernet module with two 10/100 ports, and a second can be added for four physical ports, each allowing eight simultaneous connections. Serial modules carry two ports selectable as RS-232 or RS-485, and up to ten serial ports are possible. Supported protocols are Modbus, Modbus/TCP, LPD, Syslog, Telnet, TCP and UDP, with SSL switchable per virtual connection. Front-panel USB ports are used for configuration and for firmware updates from a memory stick. Power is 90 to 264 VAC or 22 to 26 VDC.

OMNI 4000/7000 Supported Calculations and Metrology Certifications

OMNI lists the following certifications: NMi evaluation, the Measuring Instruments Directive 2004/22/EC, the EMC Directive 2004/108/EC, OIML R117-1 (2007 edition), WELMEC 7.2 (2015 edition) Chapter P with Extensions L, T, S, D and I5, and WELMEC 8.8. Environmental classes are M3 for vibration and E2 for heavy industrial electrical environments under OIML R117-1:2007. The units are configurable but not programmable on site, which protects the approved code, and only licensed firmware files can be loaded. Software sealing can set every communication port to read-only.

Specifying an OMNI 4000/7000 for a Metering Skid

The 4000 and 7000 share the same firmware approach and differ mainly in chassis size and I/O capacity: the 4000 is the compact unit for smaller stations, while the 7000 accepts more I/O modules for multi-stream stations with provers and station totals. Before requesting a quotation it helps to define:

  • Product and application: crude, refined products, LPG or natural gas, and whether the program must cover liquid, gas or both.
  • Meter types and stream count: turbine, ultrasonic, Coriolis, positive displacement or orifice, and how many runs each unit must handle.
  • Proving: bidirectional, unidirectional or small-volume prover, or master-meter proving.
  • Calculation standards: the API MPMS, AGA or ISO methods the metering contract calls for.
  • I/O and communications: pulse inputs, 4–20 mA and HART transmitters, digital I/O for valves and samplers, and serial or Ethernet links to the SCADA and DCS.

Integration with Plant Systems

OMNI flow computers act as Modbus slaves to supervisory systems, so batch reports, totals, alarms and live flow data can be read by the DCS, SCADA or a metering supervisory computer. Configuration is carried out with the manufacturer’s PC configuration software rather than by writing code, which keeps the certified calculation program untouched and simplifies audit. Security settings, password levels and audit trail records should be agreed with the metering engineer and, where applicable, the fiscal authority before commissioning.

Commissioning and Maintenance

  • Verify every configured constant, such as K-factors, meter factors, base conditions and density or composition inputs, against the approved metering data sheet.
  • Run an independent calculation check with a known set of inputs before the station goes into custody service.
  • Test transmitter inputs with a calibrator at several points and check the flow computer reading, not only the transmitter display.
  • Keep a controlled archive of the configuration file after each change; this is the fastest way to recover after a hardware replacement.
  • Check the backup battery and archive memory during routine visits so batch and audit records are not lost on power failure.

Custody Transfer in Oman and the GCC

Flow computers of this class sit at the heart of crude export lines, refinery product dispatch, pipeline interconnections between operators, gas sales to power and desalination plants, and truck and marine loading. In these duties the flow computer’s reports are the commercial record, so hardware continuity and correct configuration matter as much as the meters themselves.

About brand
In liquid and gas metering, the name OMNI means one thing: the flow computer in the metering panel. OMNI Flow Computers is based in Sugar Land, USA, and builds panel-mounted flow computers that turn meter pulses, pressure, temperature and density into the corrected volumes used for custody transfer. Seven Star LLC lists OMNI flow computers and supplies them to metering system owners and integrators in Oman, matched to the existing configuration.

OMNI flow computer series listed here

Two generations are on this page. The OMNI 3000 and 6000 are the long-established series found in a great many metering stations; the 6000 is the larger chassis with more I/O capacity. The OMNI 4000 and 7000 are the current generation, with the 7000 as the larger unit, and both the 6000 and the 7000 are listed in the version with operator display.

Ordering an OMNI flow computer: what we need

An OMNI is defined by more than its model number. Send the model, the serial number, the firmware application and revision, and the list of I/O and communication modules fitted in the chassis. Add the number of meter runs, the meter type, the product measured and the supply voltage. With that we can check a replacement or a move to the newer series against OMNI documentation. Metering stations in the GCC usually need the configuration report as well.
