PCB Piezotronics 356A01 Tri-Axial Accelerometer

Description

Overview

The PCB Piezotronics Model 356A01 is a triaxial, lightweight miniature ceramic shear ICP® accelerometer in a 0.25 in. titanium cube weighing 1.0 g. PCB Piezotronics 356A01 Ordering Code and Options

The spec sheet lists two option prefixes for the 356A01. Prefix HT is the high-temperature version and raises the upper operating limit from +121 °C to +163 °C. Prefix W is the water-resistant cable version, in which the cable entry becomes a sealed integral cable. More than one option can be combined.

The standard delivery is more than the sensor. PCB lists four supplied accessories: Model 034G05, a 1.5 m four-conductor shielded cable with a 4-pin plug on one end and three BNC plugs on the other; Model 080A109 petro wax; Model 080A90 quick bonding gel; and a NIST-traceable triaxial amplitude response calibration. The wax and gel are the mounting media, since the sensor has no threaded hole and is fixed with adhesive only.

PCB Piezotronics 356A01 Selection Notes

Two points in the spec sheet affect channel planning. The × axis has a narrower flat band than the other two axes: ±5 % holds to 5 kHz on × and to 8 kHz on y and z, so the most demanding high-frequency direction should be aligned with y or z. Low-frequency behaviour is set by the 0.24 to 1.0 s discharge time constant, and the output settles to within 10 % of bias in under 3 seconds after power is applied.

How the PCB Piezotronics 356A01 works

A ceramic element in shear mode produces a charge when the structure vibrates. Built-in electronics turn that charge into a low-impedance voltage. The sensor measures in three axes at the same time from a single mounting point.

About brand

PCB Piezotronics is the American maker of sensors for dynamic measurement: accelerometers, pressure, force and strain sensors, microphones and industrial vibration monitoring. The brothers Robert (Bob) and James Lally founded the company in August 1967 near Buffalo, New York; they are credited with ICP technology, which puts the amplifier inside the piezoelectric sensor. PCB is headquartered in Depew, New York, was acquired by MTS Systems in 2016, and has been part of Amphenol since Amphenol bought MTS in 2021.

Seven Star LLC sources and supplies PCB Piezotronics accelerometers and acoustic sensors for customers in Oman, including the models described below.

Ordering PCB sensors: what we need

Send the exact model number, including any prefix letters. PCB puts option codes in front of the base model, so a high-temperature or metric version carries a different prefix. Add the cable length and connector, and the signal conditioner or analyzer input you are using. For GCC test laboratories we can request the manufacturer's calibration certificate with the sensor.

FAQ

Questions about the PCB Piezotronics 356A01 Tri-Axial Accelerometer

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What is the PCB 356A01 used for?
The 356A01 is a tri-axial ICP accelerometer used for structural and modal vibration testing, measuring acceleration along three orthogonal axes from one mounting point.
02What is ICP technology?
ICP accelerometers integrate a small amplifier in the sensor housing, powered by a constant current source over the signal cable, giving a low-impedance voltage output.
03How is the sensor mounted?
The sensor has no threaded mounting hole and is fixed to the test structure with adhesive (petro wax or quick bonding gel are supplied), which gives the stiffness needed for accurate high-frequency response.
04How many channels does it need?
The sensor provides three output channels, one for each measurement axis, connected to a matching three-channel signal conditioner or data acquisition system.
05Is the 356A01 suitable for modal testing?
Yes. The tri-axial format reduces mounting points and added mass compared with single-axis sensors, which is important in modal test applications.
