PCB Piezotronics EX600B13 Very High Temperature ICP Accelerometer

Description

Overview

The PCB Piezotronics EX600B13 is a very high temperature industrial ICP® accelerometer from the IMI Sensors range of PCB Piezotronics. It is designed for machine surfaces that are far too hot for conventional vibration sensors: the accelerometer head is rated from -54 to +482 °C (-65 to +900 °F), while the in-line charge amplifier that produces the ICP® output is rated from -51 to +121 °C. Sensitivity is 100 mV/g with a ±50 g peak range, so the signal can be read by the same data collectors and monitoring systems that handle standard 100 mV/g sensors.

Seven Star LLC supplies the PCB Piezotronics EX600B13 to power generation, refining and petrochemical customers in Oman and the GCC who must monitor steam turbines, gas turbine casings, hot gas fans and other high-temperature equipment. Our Muscat team provides engineering support, including guidance on routing the hardline cable and placing the charge amplifier in a cooler zone.

Measurement Principle

In the PCB Piezotronics EX600B13 the sensing element is UHT-12™, a piezoelectric material used by PCB for high-temperature service, arranged in shear geometry inside an Inconel housing. Vibration of the mounting surface stresses the element and produces a charge proportional to acceleration. Because ordinary IEPE microelectronics cannot survive at several hundred degrees, the head contains no electronics; instead, the charge travels along an integral hardline cable to a separate charge amplifier which converts it into a standard low-impedance ICP® voltage signal.

This split design is the general approach used for high-temperature vibration measurement. The sensor head can sit directly on a hot casing while the electronics are kept within their own temperature limits. The amplifier is powered with 2.2 to 20 mA constant current from a 22 to 28 VDC source, and the output bias is 12 to 16 VDC, values that should be checked against the input specifications of the receiving monitor.

Engineering Design of the PCB Piezotronics EX600B13

The accelerometer head is a low-profile Inconel body measuring 1.5 in diameter by 0.75 in high (38.1 mm x 19.1 mm), fastened through three mounting holes using the three Model 081A99 cap screws that are supplied. The side-exit integral hardline cable is 10 ft (3 m) long and terminates at a 2-pin MIL-C-5015 connection, and the total weight with cable is 10.5 oz (300 g). Housing and sealing are welded hermetic, which protects the element from moisture and contaminants at elevated temperature.

The datasheet also gives a base strain sensitivity of no more than 0.006 g/µε and electrical isolation above 108 ohm. The EX prefix of the model denotes the hazardous-area version of this sensor family; the specific certification is described in the PCB declaration of conformance and instructions for use, which should be reviewed against the area classification of each installation.

In general, the hardline cable of a high-temperature sensor should be routed along the casing with gentle bends, clamped at intervals so it cannot vibrate, and kept clear of sharp edges and insulation cladding joints. The charge amplifier of the PCB Piezotronics EX600B13 should be mounted where ambient temperature stays within its rating, for example on a bracket outside the turbine enclosure or behind a heat shield, and connected to the monitoring system with standard two-wire cable. Recording the sensor serial numbers, cable routes and amplifier locations during installation also makes later maintenance and calibration checks much simpler.

  • Shipped with an NIST-traceable calibration from 10 Hz to the upper 5% frequency.

Industrial Applications

Applications for the PCB Piezotronics EX600B13 include steam turbine bearing pedestals and casings, gas turbine combustion and exhaust sections, hot induced-draft fans, superheated steam valves, kilns and reactors. In combined cycle power stations and refineries around Sohar, Duqm and Salalah, many machines run at surface temperatures well above the +121 °C limit of standard industrial accelerometers, and the PCB Piezotronics EX600B13 allows vibration to be measured at the source instead of at a cooler spot that reflects the machine condition less accurately.

Seven Star LLC supplies the PCB Piezotronics EX600B13 and can advise on complementary components. For proximity probe based shaft vibration monitoring on turbines, see the Bently Nevada 3300 XL 8 mm proximity transducer system; for monitoring racks on aeroderivative gas turbines, see the Bently Nevada 3500/44M aeroderivative GT vibration monitor; and for charge-output signal conditioning in other protection systems, the Vibro-Meter IQS900 signal conditioner is also listed.

About brand
PCB Piezotronics, founded in 1967 in Depew, USA, makes sensors for dynamic measurement: accelerometers, pressure and force sensors and measurement microphones, most of them using the company's ICP built-in electronics. Test laboratories and machinery engineers know them as PCB sensors. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies PCB Piezotronics accelerometers and acoustic sensors for customers in Oman, including the two models on this page.

PCB sensors listed here

Model 356A01 is a miniature triaxial ICP accelerometer with a ceramic shear element and titanium housing. PCB gives it a nominal sensitivity of 5 mV/g, a range of 1000 g peak and a weight of about one gram; it is adhesive mounted and has an integral four-conductor cable. Model 378B02 is a 1/2-inch prepolarized free-field microphone supplied with a mated ICP preamplifier and TEDS, at 50 mV/Pa.

Ordering PCB sensors: what we need

Send the exact model number, including any prefix letters. PCB puts option codes in front of the base model, so a high-temperature or metric version carries a different prefix. Add the cable length and connector, and the signal conditioner or analyzer input you are using. For GCC test laboratories we can request the manufacturer's calibration certificate with the sensor.

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperatures can the EX600B13 withstand?
The accelerometer head is rated from -54 to +482 C. The in-line charge amplifier, which converts the charge signal to an ICP output, is rated from -51 to +121 C and should be placed in a cooler location.
Why does the EX600B13 have a separate charge amplifier?
Standard IEPE electronics cannot operate at several hundred degrees, so the head contains only the UHT-12 sensing element. A hardline cable carries the charge to an in-line amplifier that produces a standard 100 mV/g ICP output.
How is the EX600B13 mounted?
The low-profile Inconel head is fixed with three cap screws through its mounting holes. Three Model 081A99 cap screws are supplied with the sensor.
Is the EX600B13 approved for hazardous areas?
The EX prefix denotes the hazardous-area version of the sensor. The specific certification is defined in the PCB declaration of conformance and instructions for use, which should be checked against the area classification of your site.
