Pepperl+Fuchs KFD2-BR-Ex1.3PA.93 PROFIBUS Segment Coupler

Description

KFD2-BR-Ex1.3PA.93 PROFIBUS segment coupler, PA to DP gateway

The KFD2-BR-Ex1.3PA.93 is the Pepperl+Fuchs FieldConnex Segment Coupler 1 (SK1): one module that combines an intrinsically safe fieldbus power supply for a PROFIBUS PA segment with a transparent gateway to PROFIBUS DP. The PA devices appear to the DP master as if they were wired directly to DP, with the same addresses, cyclic and acyclic data exchange.

In the code, KFD2 marks the 24 V DC K-System housing, BR the bridge or gateway function, Ex1 one Ex ia segment, 3PA the PROFIBUS PA output and 93 the fixed DP transfer rate of 93.75 kbps. The module is designed for non-redundant DP masters.

Seven Star LLC supplies this module in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

How the KFD2-BR-Ex1.3PA.93 bridges DP and PA

PROFIBUS PA runs at 31.25 kbps on a power-carrying cable, while DP runs at much higher speed. The KFD2-BR-Ex1.3PA.93 receives DP telegrams at 93.75 kbps, forwards them to the PA devices and returns their replies, so no separate address mapping or link configuration is needed. The gateway is configuration-free.

The power supply section feeds the PA segment from a single 24 V bulk supply, with the intrinsically safe output limited to 12.6 to 13.4 V and 100 mA. That output suits a modest number of devices under FISCO or Entity rules, so the segment has to be planned for current and length.

System fit and related parts

Use the KFD2-BR-Ex1.3PA.93 when an older PROFIBUS DP master runs at 93.75 kbps and a small PA segment must be added in a hazardous area. For larger segments with high-power trunks and live work in any hazardous area, the FieldConnex Power Hub with HD2-FBPS-1.25.360 modules and the HD2-DM-A diagnostic module is the manufacturer solution. The KLD2-FBPS-1.25.360 is a single-segment power supply for FOUNDATION Fieldbus H1.

Selection and ordering checklist for the KFD2-BR-Ex1.3PA.93

  • DP master speed: this model works at 93.75 kbps only.
  • Device count and current: the segment is limited to 100 mA.
  • Intrinsic safety: segment cable and devices must satisfy FISCO or Entity.
  • Master redundancy: designed for non-redundant masters.
  • Supply: 20 to 35 V DC, Power Rail or terminal wiring.
  • DP termination via rotary switch S1.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the KFD2-BR-Ex1.3PA.93

Mount on the DIN rail in a Zone 2 or safe area, connect supply, DP lines and PA trunk, set S1 if the module is at the end of the DP line, and run a bus scan from the engineering station. Check PA device addresses before commissioning because the DP master addresses them directly.

Keep the segment layout and cable data in the fieldbus documentation. Replace failed modules with the same type so the DP speed matches.

Planning a PROFIBUS PA segment with the KFD2-BR-Ex1.3PA.93

Calculate the voltage drop of the trunk cable and the total device current against the 100 mA limit, because the KFD2-BR-Ex1.3PA.93 is built for a single segment and a fixed terminator is integrated. Keep spur lengths within the FISCO limits and ground the cable screen at one point.

The fixed 93.75 kbps DP rate fixes the maximum DP cable length for the whole line, so check the DP topology as well as the PA trunk.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

In Oman and the GCC the KFD2-BR-Ex1.3PA.93 fits tank farm instrumentation, boiler house transmitters and utility packages where a PROFIBUS PA segment with Ex ia devices must connect to an existing DP network at 93.75 kbps. The ambient range of -20 to 60 °C and the 3K3 climatic class cover normal control rooms and shaded field cabinets, but a cabinet in direct summer sun can exceed the limit, so ventilation or a sunshield is worth planning. Keep a spare coupler on site: because the unit joins power supply and gateway, a failure interrupts the whole segment, and exchange is quick when the pluggable terminals are used.

Documentation matters as much as hardware. Record the PA device tags and addresses, the cable lengths, the DP termination setting and the supply source in the loop folder, so that a replacement coupler can be installed and checked against the same data without lengthy troubleshooting.

About brand

Pepperl+Fuchs is a German manufacturer of industrial sensors and explosion protection equipment, founded in 1945 in Mannheim by Walter Pepperl and Ludwig Fuchs as a radio repair shop. Defective transformers led them into manufacturing, and the company developed its first proximity switch in the late 1950s. Pepperl+Fuchs is headquartered in Mannheim and is a pioneer of intrinsically safe electrical equipment for hazardous areas.

Seven Star LLC lists Pepperl+Fuchs sensors, isolated barriers, power supplies and hazardous-area mobile devices, and supplies them to instrument and automation teams in Oman by exact model designation.

Where Pepperl+Fuchs equipment is used

Isolated barriers sit between field instruments in Zone 0 or Zone 1 and the DCS or safety system in refineries, gas plants and chemical works. NAMUR sensors report valve position and machine states in classified areas. Photoelectric sensors and LiDAR scanners work in conveying, packaging, warehousing and vehicle guidance. Ex-rated tablets and phones are carried on operator rounds and maintenance jobs.

Ordering Pepperl+Fuchs parts: what we need

Send the complete model designation as printed on the device, including every suffix; a single letter can change the supply voltage or the output type. Add the part number if the label shows one. For barriers, tell us the field device and signal type, the number of channels and whether the safety loop needs a SIL-assessed module. For mobile devices, state the zone or division and the regional radio version.
