WIKA 910.32 Cooling Element for Pressure Gauges, 150 and 200 C

Description

WIKA 910.32 cooling element for pressure measuring instruments, to 200 °C medium

The WIKA 910.32 is a screw-on cooling element that goes between a hot process connection and a pressure gauge or transmitter. It is a compact stainless steel finned body with a G 1/2 B male thread on the process side and a G 1/2 female thread for the instrument, per EN 837. The data sheet lists two versions: three cooling fins for medium temperatures up to 150 °C and five cooling fins for up to 200 °C, both able to work at pressures up to 600 bar. Seven Star LLC supplies the 910.32 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat, and this page explains how the element works and how it is specified.

How the 910.32 cools the medium

The cooling element is used when the temperature of the medium would exceed the permissible limit of the pressure measuring instrument. Heat from the process is conducted through the stainless steel body and given off by air circulation and radiation at the fins. This lowers the temperature of the medium that actually reaches the instrument enough to keep it inside its limits and reduces any temperature error of the measurement. The data sheet adds that the same element can be used to warm very cold media, provided the ambient temperature is higher than the medium temperature.

The data sheet includes a characteristic curve of the temperature reached at the instrument against the temperature at the measuring point, for an ambient temperature of 20 °C, for both the three-fin and five-fin elements. The five-fin version is the better choice where the medium is near 200 °C, where the extra fins increase the surface for heat dissipation. The curve is valid for an ambient temperature of 20 °C, so in a hot Gulf plant room at higher ambient temperature the instrument will run warmer than the curve shows.

Choosing between the 3-fin and 5-fin versions of the 910.32

The choice follows the medium temperature at the tapping and the temperature limit of the instrument being protected. For a standard Bourdon tube gauge with a medium limit of 100 °C, the three-fin element lets the process be several tens of degrees above 100 °C, while the five-fin element extends that further. The 600 bar rating is valid only if the temperature at the measuring instrument stays below 100 °C, which is why the characteristic curve should be consulted rather than assumed. The extra 10 mm length of the five-fin version has to be allowed for in tight panels.

Where the 910.32 fits and the alternatives

For steam and vapour, a syphon 910.15 forms a condensate plug and is the traditional solution, handling temperatures up to 550 °C. The 910.32 is the shorter, screw-on alternative for liquids and gases up to 200 °C. The cooling element is installed on the process side of the stopcock 910.10 or shut-off valve 910.11, with a snubber 910.12 or an overpressure protector 910.13 where needed. Sealings 910.17 close the parallel threads. Transmitters such as the S-20 have their own integrated cooling elements up to 200 °C, so a separate 910.32 is for gauges and other instruments without one.

Selection and ordering checklist for the 910.32

  • Maximum medium temperature at the tapping.
  • Temperature limit of the instrument to be protected, and ambient temperature.
  • 3-fin (150 °C) or 5-fin (200 °C) version.
  • Operating pressure, up to 600 bar with correct sealing.
  • Threads: G 1/2 B and G 1/2 female as standard; other connections on request.
  • Sealing rings per EN 837 for both threads.
  • Mounting space for the 53.5 mm or 63.5 mm length.

Installation and maintenance of the 910.32

Screw the element onto the process connection with a suitable sealing and then screw the instrument onto it, tightening each joint on its own flats. Mount it so that air can circulate around the fins; do not wrap it in insulation or place it in an enclosed hot box. If the line is lagged, keep the lagging off the fins. After the first heat-up, check both joints for weeping. Because the body has no moving parts there is no routine maintenance beyond occasional cleaning of dust from the fins, which would otherwise insulate them, especially in sand-laden Gulf conditions.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

The 910.32 is used on thermal oil lines, hot water and hot oil circuits, compressor discharge and process gas lines where the medium is hot but no condensate plug is needed. In power and desalination plants it protects gauges on heated lines and on engine and turbine auxiliaries. Because ambient conditions in Oman often exceed 40 °C, the cooling element is worth selecting with some margin.

About brand

WIKA is the German manufacturer of pressure, temperature, level and flow instruments, best known for its pressure gauges. Alexander Wiegand and Philipp Kachel founded it on 2 January 1946 in Klingenberg am Main, Bavaria. The name comes from the first two letters of their surnames. WIKA is still run by the Wiegand family and is headquartered in Klingenberg.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list WIKA pressure gauges, diaphragm seals, transmitters, switches, thermometers and thermowells, and supply them to plants, contractors and panel builders in Oman and the GCC by model and order code.

Temperature sensors and thermowells TR10, TR12-B, TR33, TC10-B, TW10 flanged, TW15 threaded RTD and thermocouple measurement in process lines

The WIKA model number tells you the build. In 232.50, the first digit 2 means stainless steel wetted parts, the second digit 3 means a liquid-fillable case, and ".50" is the case style. The 111 series uses copper alloy wetted parts and suits water and air. Where the medium is corrosive, very hot or would block the gauge, a diaphragm seal such as the 990.27 keeps it away from the Bourdon tube. For temperature, a thermowell like the TW10 lets you remove the sensor without opening the process.

Where WIKA instruments are used

In Oman and the GCC, WIKA gauges, transmitters and thermometers are used in oil and gas, refining and petrochemical plants, power and desalination, water networks, district cooling and HVAC, and on skids and machines from OEMs.

Ordering WIKA instruments: what we need

Send the model, dial size (for example 63, 100 or 160 mm), range and unit, connection size and position (lower or back mount), accuracy class and whether liquid filling is needed. For diaphragm seals and thermowells, add the process connection, materials and insertion length.
