Description
The Swagelok SS-4BKT combines a bellows seal with a quick-acting toggle handle. Most bellows-sealed valves are turned by a knob over several rotations; the T in this code marks a black nylon toggle that opens and closes the valve with a short lever movement. The valve has a 316 stainless steel body, a 321 stainless steel bellows, a soft PCTFE conical stem tip and 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting ends, and it is cleaned to Swagelok SC-11. It suits clean gas panels where quick shutoff with no stem packing is wanted at modest pressure.

A toggle on a bellows valve
The toggle version trades pressure for speed. A standard round-handled 4BK is rated at 1000 psig at room temperature, but the data page for the SS-4BKT shows a working pressure of only 100 psig (6.8 bar) at both 100 F and 200 F. The lower rating reflects the toggle actuator and handle, so do not substitute it for a round-handled valve on a higher-pressure line. The bellows and the PCTFE tip give leak-tight shutoff without stem packing.
The toggle handle, spring and washer are listed in the catalog materials table as black nylon, stainless spring and nylon washer for the 4BKT series.
Where it fits
Gas distribution panels, analyser feeds, vacuum and purge lines at low pressure, and any place where an operator needs a visible, fast on-off action and a leak-tight stem seal. It is a soft-seat valve limited to 200 F by the PCTFE, so it is not for hot service. A catalog table also lists handle colour options with suffixes, for example -BL for blue and -RD for red, useful for colour-coding gas lines.
Panel mounting is supported; check the panel hole and thickness dimensions in the catalog before drilling.

SS is 316 stainless steel, 4 is the 1/4 in. tube size, B is the B series, K the PCTFE stem tip and T the toggle handle. The same family offers SS-4BK with a round handle, SS-4BG with a metal tip and gasket, and -BW4 or -V51 end options. Quote the exact code, because pressure rating changes with the handle type.
Make up the Swagelok tube fitting ends on annealed tubing with one and one-quarter turns of the nut from finger-tight.

Swagelok is the American maker of tube fittings and small-bore valves, best known for its two-ferrule compression tube fitting. Fred A. Lennon and Cullen B. Crawford founded it in Cleveland, Ohio, in July 1947 as Crawford Fitting Company to make that fitting. Lennon bought the whole business and the patent in 1948, and the company has been based in Solon, Ohio, since the mid-1960s.

A Swagelok part number can be read directly. In SS-810-6, "SS" is 316 stainless steel, "810" means a 1/2 in. tube fitting (8 sixteenths of an inch, 10 series), and "-6" is a union. A suffix such as "-8" adds a 1/2 in. NPT end, and "M0" marks metric tube, as in SS-12M0-6 for 12 mm. Tube fittings must be made up the same way every time: finger-tight, then 1 1/4 turns for most sizes. A gap inspection gauge confirms the fitting has been pulled up.
