Flowserve Logix 3800e Digital Positioner

Description

Flowserve Logix 3800e digital positioner overview

The Flowserve Logix 3800e is a value-oriented digital positioner for single- and double-acting linear and rotary valves. It is built on the platform of the Logix 3800 and shares its form and fit, but with a simpler diagnostic set to keep cost down. One-button setup configures zero, span and gain in under a minute on most valves. Seven Star LLC supplies the Logix 3800e in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat; this page condenses the manufacturer brochure and installation manual to help with your enquiry.

The positioner is sold in HART and non-communicating versions. The installation manual refers to the 381Xe (no communication) and 382Xe (HART), with the Logix 3820e HART unit described in detail, and to explosion-proof, intrinsically safe and general-purpose housing options.

One-button setup and the controls of the Logix 3800e

The quick-calibration feature is the main commissioning aid. The technician checks mounting, linkage and tubing, applies air and loop current, and starts the calibration routine, which sets zero, span and gain automatically. Local switches then adjust behaviour. The HART installation manual lists a HART protocol switch (version 6 or 7), a signal-at-closed switch (4 mA or 20 mA) and a valve stability switch that tunes for low-friction or high-friction valves.

The positioner can also be tuned to suit sticky actuators and unusual valve types, and it can be retrofitted to valves from other makers. Flowserve also states that the positioner works with 24 V solenoid valves suited to the application.

Housing, relay options and hazardous-area markings of the Logix 3800e

Three housings are offered: an explosion-proof housing, an intrinsically safe housing with aluminium cover, and an economical plastic-covered version for general-purpose use. The manual lists explosion-proof markings of Ex db IIC T6 to T4 Gb for ATEX and IECEx, and Class I Div 1 Groups B-D in North America, with intrinsically safe protection up to Ex ia IIC. The tables show T4 to T6 temperature classes with ambient limits that fall as the temperature class tightens.

Protection Marking in the manual
Explosion-proof (XP) Ex db IIC T6…T4 Gb; Class I Div 1 Groups B-D; dust Ex tb IIIC T105 °C Db
Intrinsically safe Ex ia IIC T6…T4 Ga; Class I, II, III Div 1 Groups A-G
Non-incendive / non-sparking Class I, II, III Div 2; Ex nA IIC, Ex ec IIC Gc
Enclosure Type 4X, IP66
Temperature classes T4 to +85 °C, T5 to +55 °C, T6 to +45 °C

The label on the unit and the certificate it refers to decide what is permitted at a site, so supply the label data when ordering a replacement.

Both single-acting and double-acting relays are covered in the manual. The double-acting relay delivers about 30.6 Nm³/h at 4.1 bar, whereas the single-acting relay delivers about 15.3 Nm³/h at 4.1 bar. A low-bleed double-acting relay is also listed for consumption-sensitive installations. Air consumption is quoted per relay, for example 0.637 Nm³/h at 4.1 bar for the standard double-acting version, and the manual tells users to supply clean, dry, oil-free air or an acceptable gas such as nitrogen or sweet natural gas; sour gas is not allowed.

Logix 3800e selection and ordering checklist

  • Communication: non-communicating 4-20 mA (381Xe) or HART (382Xe).
  • Housing: explosion-proof, intrinsically safe with aluminium cover, or plastic cover for non-hazardous areas.
  • Actuator action and relay: single or double acting, standard or low bleed.
  • Mounting: linear (stroke length), rotary, FlowTop or NAMUR, and whether direct mount is used.
  • Area certification code and temperature class printed on the nameplate.
  • Options such as analog position output and the RedRaven asset-health connection.

Installing and maintaining the Logix 3800e

Follow the manual for conduit and air thread types, because mixing threads can damage the housing and invalidate its certification. The unit is not rated IP66 / Type 4X until covers and plugs are properly installed. Wire the loop in shielded cable with the shield grounded at the source, use HART-compatible barriers where applicable, and check that the compliance voltage of the controller is sufficient at 20 mA.

The Logix 3800e is more limited in diagnostics than the Logix 3800, but it still reports alarms and, when connected to the RedRaven platform, supplies asset health data for condition-based maintenance. A common spare strategy is to hold one complete positioner per valve family and to keep spare covers, seals and filters.

Typical Logix 3800e applications in Oman and the GCC

Flowserve points to oil and gas, petrochemical, and pulp and paper service for the Logix 3800e, and similar duties exist across the Gulf: upstream oil and gas facilities, gas plants, refineries, power and water utilities. The explosion-proof housing is relevant for classified process areas; the plastic-cover version suits non-hazardous utility valves. For hot outdoor locations select the correct temperature class, and consider shading.
