Overview

The Masoneilan 4411 is a proportional current-to-pressure converter from Baker Hughes, described by the manufacturer as a precision electronic pressure controller for continuous process control applications. It converts a two-wire 4-20 mA signal into a proportional pneumatic output of 3-15 psig or 6-30 psig, and it is designed for pneumatic positioners and other pneumatic instruments that need a clean electronic-to-pneumatic interface. Operating Principle of the Masoneilan 4411

The Masoneilan 4411 operates a closed-loop system that incorporates a feedback sensor. The input current sets a demanded output pressure, the sensor measures the actual output, and the electronics adjust the valve mechanism until the two agree. Baker Hughes states that this closed loop is what delivers long-term stability and high accuracy, with a total error of 0.1 percent of span or better for loads above 500 cc and a response time of one second or less from 10 to 90 percent of output pressure into a 500 cc load.

The design is fail-safe. If the loop current fails, the output pressure falls to a low value, below 15 mbar (0.2 psig) in under two seconds according to the fact sheet. The converter combines substantial flow capacity, above 300 normal litres per minute (12 scfm), with the ability to give precise control into closed-volume dead-end applications, so it can drive a positioner, a small actuator or a volume booster without needing a separate relay. Temperature compensation is built in, with a typical effect of less than 0.035 percent of span per degree Celsius from -40 to +85 degrees Celsius.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 4411

The housing is aluminium and zinc die-casting with nitrile diaphragms and a grey epoxy powder coating, weatherproof to IP66 and NEMA Type 4X when mounted upright, and the unit weighs 2.07 kg. The Masoneilan 4411 has twin conduit entries, 1/2 inch NPT as standard or M20 through an adapter, and an internal terminal block for cable up to 2.5 mm2. A 3.5 mm jack socket allows the unit to be calibrated or monitored with a current source or ammeter without disturbing the loop, and zero, span and tight shut-off trimpots are accessed under the screw-on lid.

Pneumatically, the supply and output ports are 1/4 inch NPT female, with integral 1/8 inch NPT gauge ports and exhaust baffles that can be piped away for a captured-bleed installation. A built-in air filter rated 98 percent efficient at 2 micrometres is a field-replaceable part, as are the modular electronics. The factory calibration is at 30 psig supply, although operation is possible from 18 to 150 psig, and the tight shut-off feature is deactivated at the factory and can be set to drive the output to zero at a chosen signal level.

Industrial Applications

Baker Hughes lists the Masoneilan 4411 for power generation, refining, petrochemicals and midstream and upstream oil and gas, including steam turbines, gas turbines, condensers, cooling towers, distillation, hydroprocessing, compression, pipeline operations and liquefaction. Typical use is to give a pneumatic positioner a standard electronic signal, to drive a pneumatic actuator directly, or to provide a pneumatic setpoint to another instrument, in plants where heat or vibration at the valve make it better to keep electronics elsewhere. In Oman, desalination plants, power stations and refinery units around Sohar and Duqm are typical locations.
