TopWorx TV-Series Valve Controllers

Description

Valve controllers with bus, switch and solenoid options

The TopWorx TV-Series valve controllers are installed on valve actuators to give local open and closed indication and remote signalling. The installation manual shows six enclosure variants: a Lexan 123R UV F1 rated housing, three cast A360 aluminium housings with dichromate conversion coating, and two 316 stainless steel housings. Its switch options cover mechanical switches, NAMUR sensors, proximity sensors and AS-i, DeviceNet and PROFIBUS communication.

Using the manual

Each switch option has a wiring diagram showing open and closed switches, with and without solenoid connections, and the AS-i, DeviceNet and PROFIBUS sections give bit settings, LED status and network parameters. The PROFIBUS section notes that communication cabling must be encased in conduit and grounded to meet EMC requirements. Dimension drawings show the mounting hole patterns for the various enclosures.

What to confirm before ordering

The spreadsheet row lists TVA, TVF and TVL, but the manual itself does not map those letters to the enclosure variants, so confirm the exact model code with the supplier. Check the housing, switch option, solenoid voltage, communication protocol, certification and the actuator mounting pattern.

What a valve controller does on an automated valve

A valve controller, often called a limit switch box, sits on top of a quarter-turn actuator and follows the rotation of the actuator shaft. Cams or targets on the internal shaft operate the switches or sensors at the open and closed positions, and a visual indicator dome shows the valve position to operators in the field. In many configurations the same enclosure also provides wiring for the solenoid valve that drives the actuator, so one cable entry point brings both position feedback and control to the valve. This reduces the number of separate field devices and junction boxes in a piping area.

Key features of the TV-Series

  • A choice of plastic, aluminium and stainless steel enclosures, so the same functional concept can be matched to the environment of each valve.
  • Stainless steel fasteners and shaft as standard, with 316 available where corrosion resistance must be raised further.
  • Seal materials selectable by housing, which matters when the controller is exposed to chemicals, hot water washdown or ozone.
  • Switching options ranging from general-purpose mechanical switches to low-current switches for electronic inputs, intrinsically safe NAMUR sensors and DC proximity sensors.
  • Fieldbus options that report position and control the solenoid over a single network cable instead of multi-core wiring.
  • Wiring diagrams in the manual for each option, with and without solenoid connections.

Choosing the switch or sensor option

Control system input Suitable option Notes
Relay logic or motor control circuits at mains voltage Mechanical switch option M or DPDT option Robust contacts for higher currents.
PLC digital inputs at low current Mechanical option K or proximity sensors Low-current contacts avoid contact oxidation problems found with heavy-duty switches at very small loads.
Intrinsically safe loops in hazardous areas NAMUR sensors Used with a matching isolating amplifier in the safe area.
Fieldbus architecture AS-i, DeviceNet or PROFIBUS Reduces I/O cards and multi-core cables on large valve counts.

Choosing the enclosure material

The UV-rated Lexan housing is lightweight and does not corrode, which makes it a practical option for water treatment and general utility valves in non-hazardous areas. Coated aluminium housings are common in process plants where greater mechanical strength is needed. The 316 stainless steel housings are the usual choice for offshore platforms, coastal terminals, food and pharmaceutical washdown and chemical splash zones. Hazardous area certification depends on the specific model, so the certificate for the exact variant must be confirmed rather than assumed from the material.

Installation guidance

  • Mount the controller with the bracket and coupler that match the actuator top interface, keeping the shaft aligned to avoid side load on the bearing.
  • Tighten housing bolts and mounting screws to the torques given in the manual; overtightening a plastic housing can crack it.
  • Use suitably rated cable glands or conduit seals and plug unused entries to keep the enclosure rating.
  • Set the cams with the valve actually at its open and closed positions, then cycle the valve and confirm the signals at the control room.
  • For fieldbus versions, set the node address before connection and follow the shielding and earthing instructions.

Maintenance in Oman and GCC conditions

Strong sunlight, airborne sand and salt-laden coastal air are the main challenges for field instruments in the region. Inspect the indicator dome for UV degradation and the cover seal for hardening during routine rounds, and replace seals when the cover is opened after long service. Check that cable glands remain tight, since thermal cycling between day and night can loosen fittings. In desalination plants, refineries and port facilities, stainless steel housings and fasteners reduce long-term corrosion problems.

What to include in an RFQ

  • Complete model code, or the housing material, switch option and quantity.
  • Required hazardous area certification and enclosure rating.
  • Solenoid voltage and whether a solenoid is to be integrated.
  • Actuator make, model and mounting pattern for bracket selection.
  • Communication protocol, where a fieldbus version is needed.

About brand

TopWorx is the valve controls and limit switch brand of Emerson, based in Louisville, Kentucky, USA. Its products mount on valve actuators to show whether a valve is open or closed, send switch or analog signals back to the control system and, in some models, operate the actuator pilot valve. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, lists products from the manufacturer's manuals and datasheets and quotes against the exact model code.

TopWorx product groups

The documents on this site cover GO Switch leverless limit switches, the D-Series, TX-Series, TV-Series and K-Series discrete valve controllers, the DVR valve position monitor and the PD Series smart valve positioner. Options in these documents include GO Switch, mechanical and inductive sensors, 4-20 mA and HART transmitters, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, AS-i, DeviceNet and PROFIBUS communication, integrated pilots and explosion-protected enclosures.

Ordering TopWorx products: what we need

Send the full model code from the nameplate or the datasheet nomenclature, the actuator make, mounting pattern and size, the supply voltage and signal type, the hazardous-area certification and the quantity. Many options cannot be combined, so we confirm the code against the manufacturer's documentation before quoting.
