Lovato DCRL5 Automatic Power Factor Controller, 5 Steps

Description

Keeping cos phi on target with a step-switching controller

The DCRL5 is an automatic power factor controller of the Lovato Electric DCR family with 5 output steps and an icon display. It measures the reactive power through a current transformer with a 5 A or 1 A secondary and switches capacitor steps in and out to keep the power factor near the target.

The auxiliary supply is 100 to 440 VAC, so one controller covers many line voltages. Voltage inputs accept up to 600 VAC line-to-line and the current input range is 0.025 to 6 A for the 5 A scale.

Selecting the controller

Choose the number of steps from the capacitor bank layout; five steps is typical for a small to medium bank. Larger banks use the 8-step DCRL8 or the DCRG8, which can be expanded up to 24 steps.

Remember the controller does not size the bank; it needs a power-factor study of the plant.

Applications and installation

Typical use is a plant cubicle with an incomer current transformer, capacitor contactors and detuning reactors where required. Set the target power factor, step sizes and CT ratio during commissioning; the controller then adapts the number of active steps to the load.

The controller mounts in a panel cut-out; relay or static outputs drive the step contactors or thyristor modules.

About brand

Lovato Electric is the Italian manufacturer of low-voltage electrical components for industrial automation and power distribution: contactors, motor protection circuit breakers, soft starters, variable speed drives, power factor controllers, transfer switch and generator controllers, and energy meters. It was founded in Bergamo in 1922 and has been run by the same family for four generations. Its headquarters is in Gorle, near Bergamo, and it celebrated its centenary in 2022.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat. We list Lovato motor control, drives and power management products, and supply them to panel builders, contractors and maintenance teams in Oman and the GCC by order code.

Lovato order codes describe the product. On a contactor such as BF0910A230, "BF09" is the frame and rated current (9 A in AC-3), "10" is the built-in auxiliary contact (one normally open), "A" means an AC coil and "230" is the coil voltage. The coil voltage must match the control circuit exactly, so it is the most common detail to check when replacing one. For motors, a soft starter limits the inrush current at start and stop, while a variable speed drive controls the speed continuously and saves energy on pumps and fans that do not need full flow all the time.

Where Lovato products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Lovato components are built into motor control centres, pump and HVAC panels, capacitor banks for power factor correction, generator and ATS panels, and machine control panels for industry, water and buildings.
