ABB FECA-01 EtherCAT Adapter Module for ABB Drives
Description
EtherCAT connectivity for ABB drives
The FECA-01 adds an EtherCAT slave interface to supported ABB drives. EtherCAT suits motion and fast machine control, and the module lets the drive take part in a deterministic network next to servo axes, I/O and sensors controlled by one master.
Two RJ-45 ports, X1 and X2, let the module sit inside a line topology without an external switch. Traffic runs at 100 Mbit/s full duplex over 100BASE-TX, and the manual calls for Cat5e shielded cable with segments up to 100 m.

Ports, cabling and drive profile
Drive control follows the CiA 402 device profile through CANopen over EtherCAT, with the usual object dictionary for control word, status word and target and actual values. ESI files describe the module to the master’s engineering tool.
The module takes +3.3 V from the drive, with a maximum of 450 mA noted in the manual. As with other ABB option modules it is fitted into a drive slot, and the manual’s revision F lists the supported drive series and control programs.
Commissioning notes
Engineers choosing between EtherCAT and other Ethernet options should look at the master side first: if the controller already runs EtherCAT, the FECA-01 avoids a gateway and keeps cycle times short.
Start-up consists of mounting the module, linking the two RJ-45 ports into the chain, enabling the adapter in the drive parameters and importing the ESI file into the master.
Selection and planning notes
EtherCAT masters distribute data on the fly, so every slave in the line should be listed in the master’s configuration in the physical order it is wired. After the drive, the next node must be connected to port X2. Keep cycle times realistic for a drive: a few milliseconds is usually plenty for speed control, and shorter cycles only add load on the drive’s communication task.
To browse the drives that accept this adapter, open AC drives, or read the family overview on the ABB ACS580 page. For a mixed network, check whether other vendors’ slaves need a different ESI version.
Spare-part planning is simple for this module: keep one tested FECA-01 with the drive parameter backup and the ESI file in the service kit, so a failed module can be swapped and the line restarted without a laptop-based search for files.
Documents and quotation
Seven Star LLC supplies the FECA-01 on request from Muscat; send the drive type, control program version and the network details, and we reply with availability and lead time. The user manual (3AUA0000068940, revision F) is linked on this page.
Confirm before ordering: the drive type and firmware, the EtherCAT master and ESI import, cable category and length per segment, and the CiA 402 modes you intend to use.

About brand
ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive
ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.
Where ABB products are used
In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
