ABB FPNO-21 PROFINET IO Adapter Module for ABB Drives

Description

ABB FPNO-21 PROFINET IO adapter for drives

The ABB FPNO-21 is a PROFINET IO adapter module for ABB drives. It lets a PROFINET controller start, stop, set references and read status of a drive, using cyclic data and acyclic parameter access.

One typical use is an ACS580 or ACS880 drive in a Siemens-controlled line where PROFINET is the standard plant network.

Commissioning follows the usual PROFINET pattern: import the GSDML file into the engineering tool, assign the device name, choose the telegram type and map the cyclic words to the drive’s control and status words. Parameter access through acyclic requests allows changes without stopping the cyclic exchange.

Protocol functions and compatibility

ABB specifies PROFINET IO conformance class B with security class SC1 and a GSDML 2.4 device description file. The module also handles MRP and S2 redundancy, plus SNTP, HTTPS, SNMP and OPC UA services listed in the manual.

The compatible list covers the ACS380, ACS480, ACS560, ACS580, ACH580, ACQ580 and ACS880. The ACS355 can use the module from firmware 5.090 onwards, such as the ACS355-03E-23A1-4.

The adapter has two RJ-45 ports with an internal switch, so devices can be chained in a line without extra hardware. Use industrial shielded Ethernet cable, keep it separate from motor cables and verify the device name and IP assignment if the drive does not appear in the controller’s network scan.

Order code and option slot

In FPNO-21, FPNO is the PROFINET IO adapter family and 21 the hardware version. On an ACS880-01 the module is specified by option code +K492, so it can be shipped fitted. Check the ACS880-01 family page or the drive’s own order code for other families.

More network modules are in the industrial communication category.

When quoting, tell us the drive family and its firmware, because the ACS355 needs 5.090 or later and the other families expect the drive’s own option slot. The same part number is used across these families, so the order code of the drive decides whether a fitted option is possible.

An option module is only useful when it matches both the drive and the network, so send us the drive type code, its firmware level and the controller that will talk to it. Add the required cable length and connector type. With those facts the right module can be confirmed, and the manual attached here helps your engineer check the parameters.

Choosing the FPNO-21 for a drive project

The FPNO-21 is the adapter to choose when the plant controller communicates over PROFINET IO and the drive is one of the compatible families listed above. If the line uses a different fieldbus, ABB offers other adapters in the same range, such as the FEIP-21 for EtherNet/IP, so the network protocol should be fixed before the module is selected. Because the adapter plugs into the drive option slot and takes part in the drive’s own configuration, it adds network control without a separate gateway.

The built-in switch lets drives be chained in a line, which reduces cabling back to a central switch. Where the network must tolerate a cable break, MRP support allows the drives to sit in a ring managed by a suitable redundancy manager, and S2 redundancy supports systems with redundant controllers.

Typical applications

PROFINET control of ABB drives is common on pumps, fans, conveyors, mixers and process lines in plants that standardise on Siemens controllers. Through the adapter the controller sends start, stop and speed references and reads back status, actual values and fault information in the cyclic exchange. Acyclic access lets engineers read and change drive parameters from the control system, which supports central diagnostics and recipe changes without visiting each drive.

Commissioning considerations

Agree the device naming and IP addressing scheme with the network owner before commissioning starts, and make sure the device name set in the engineering tool matches the name assigned to the drive. Choose the telegram type early so that the PLC program and the drive parameters are prepared together. After the module is installed and the drive is powered, confirm that the controller sees the device and that cyclic data is exchanged before testing motor control.

Test the drive reaction to a loss of communication and set the fault response so the machine goes to a safe state if the network stops. If the security and service functions such as HTTPS, SNMP or OPC UA are used, coordinate their settings with the site IT and OT teams. The ABB manual attached to this page describes these settings in detail.

Documenting the network

Keep a record of each drive device name, IP address and telegram type, and label the cables at both ports. Good records make it quick to restore communication after maintenance on a drive.

Specifying the module in your RFQ

State the type code FPNO-21, the quantity and the drive family and type that will host it. If the module is to be fitted in a new ACS880-01, include the drive order code with the option code +K492 so that the request can be checked against the drive catalogue.

About brand

ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.

Ordering ABB products: what we need

Send the full type code from the nameplate (for example ACS580-01-046A-4 or 266DSH...) and, for spare parts, the ABB ID number (such as 3BSE008508R1 or 1SBL176001R3010). For drives, add the motor power and current and any option codes (+...). For instruments, send the complete order code, which sets range, materials and approvals. Baldor motors are listed on their own brand page.
