ABB RPBA-01 PROFIBUS DP Adapter Module

Description

PROFIBUS DP adapter for ABB ACS550 and ACS800 drives

RPBA-01 is the PROFIBUS DP adapter module that ABB fitted to its ACS550 and ACS800 drive families. The drive appears as a slave on the PROFIBUS network, so a PLC can start and stop it, set speed or torque references, feed the drive’s PID controller, read status and actual values, change parameters and reset faults.

ABB’s legacy fieldbus page lists the RPBA-01 as compatible with ACS550, ACH550, ACS800, ACQ800 and DCS800, and the ACS550 catalog names it as option K454. A newer drive generation uses the FPBA-01, described on the ABB FPBA-01 page. Other network modules are listed under Industrial Communications.

Wiring, addressing and commissioning

The module plugs into an option slot on the drive’s motor control board and is held by two M3 x 10 screws. Set the node address with the two rotary switches (address 00 to 99, or 00 when the address is set by software) and choose the bus termination switch position. Shielded twisted-pair RS-485 cable is used; the manual lists maximum lengths of 1200 m at 93.75 kbit/s or below, down to 100 m at 3 Mbit/s and above on line A cable.

On an ACS550, set parameter 98.02 to EXT FBA; on an ACS800, set parameter 98.02 COMM. MODULE LINK to FIELDBUS. The PLC configuration uses the GSD file and either the PROFIDRIVE (generic) or the vendor-specific ABB Drives operation mode, plus a PPO type, baud rate and node number. Status LEDs show fault states.

Selection and ordering notes

Order by the type code RPBA-01. The package contains the module, two M3 x 10 screws and the manual. Check which fieldbus modules your drive generation accepts: ABB’s network adapter brochure lists FPBA-01 for the ACS355 and ACS580 platforms, while the ACS550 catalog prints K454 as the factory option code for RPBA-01.

The document supplied is the 2005 revision F manual, so it describes the module as originally released. Confirm the drive firmware and your PLC master before ordering, particularly if the project mixes older and newer ABB drives on one bus.

Fitting the adapter safely

Always disconnect the drive from the mains and wait for the DC link capacitors to discharge, as described in the drive manual, before opening the cover to fit the RPBA-01. Handle the module by its edges and use normal electrostatic precautions, since the electronics on the module and on the motor control board are sensitive to static discharge. Check that the 34-pin connector is seated fully and that both fixing screws are tightened, so that vibration from the drive cooling fan or the driven machine cannot loosen the connection over time.

Set the node address and the termination switch before closing the drive. Only the devices at the two physical ends of a PROFIBUS segment should have termination switched on; a terminator left active in the middle of a line is a frequent cause of communication errors that are hard to trace later.

Network cabling practice

Lay the PROFIBUS cable separately from motor cables, preferably in its own tray or with physical separation, and cross power cables at right angles where crossing cannot be avoided. Connect the cable shield at each connector as described in the PROFIBUS installation guidelines and make sure the drive cabinet has a sound equipotential bonding system. When extending an existing network, update the bus layout drawing with every new station so the segment length and station count can be checked against the limits in the specification table.

Selection checks for retrofit projects

Many RPBA-01 orders are for spares or for extending plants that already run ACS550 or ACS800 drives. Before ordering, it helps to confirm:

  • the exact drive type and the slot in which the existing adapter is fitted;
  • whether the PLC project uses the DP-V0 or DP-V1 GSD file;
  • the operation mode and PPO type already configured, so the replacement can be set up identically;
  • whether the parameter set of the drive has been backed up, to save commissioning time.

Recording these details on the RFQ allows a like-for-like replacement to be prepared without guesswork on site.

Heat and dust in Gulf motor control rooms

The module is rated IP20 and relies entirely on the drive enclosure and the panel for protection. In Oman and other GCC plants, drives are frequently housed in motor control rooms or outdoor kiosks where summer temperatures and airborne dust put pressure on cooling. Keep the cabinet air-conditioning or filtered ventilation in good order, clean or replace filter mats regularly, and ensure that the drive’s heat sink and fan are free of dust, because overheating of the drive also affects the option boards inside it.

Humid coastal air can corrode the D-SUB connector contacts over the years. During planned maintenance, check that the bus connector screws are tight, look for signs of corrosion, and use the status indications on the module together with the PLC diagnostics to confirm a healthy connection before the drive returns to service.

It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive

ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.

Where ABB products are used

In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
