Description
K22.4 ESFR performance at lower end-head pressure
The Viking VK506 is a K22.4 (320 metric) ESFR pendent sprinkler, available since 2013 according to Viking. The larger orifice allows ESFR performance at lower end-head pressures than K14 heads, which can reduce or remove the need for a fire pump and gives the designer more freedom when sizing piping. Viking says it can eliminate in-rack sprinklers for specified high-piled storage up to 40 ft (12.2 m) under ceilings up to 45 ft (13.7 m) under UL, and up to 45 ft (13.7 m) under ceilings up to 50 ft (15.2 m) under FM.
It targets severe-challenge storage: palletized and solid-pile, plus single-row, double-row, multiple-row and portable open-rack arrangements without open-top containers or solid shelves. The datasheet adds that cULus lists it for cartoned unexpanded plastics while FM Approves cartoned and uncartoned unexpanded plastics and exposed expanded polystyrene and polyurethane.

When K22.4 is the better fit
Choose a K22.4 design when hydraulic calculations show that a K14 or K16.8 head would need a booster pump to reach end-head pressure, or when larger piping runs make the lower pressure attractive. The trade-off is a heavier flow per sprinkler, so check the water storage and the supply capacity as well as the pipe size. The commodity and storage height must still match the VK506 listing tables printed in the datasheet.
Ordering follows the same three steps used across the range: base part number for the thread, finish suffix A for brass, then the temperature suffix. 18493AC is a 1 in NPT VK506 in brass at 165 °F.
