Safco Italia Basic UNI 45 Fire-Fighting Hose 20 m

Description

A lined polyester fire hose made in Italy

The Safco Italia Basic UNI 45 is a 20 m fire-fighting hose with a circular woven jacket of high tenacity polyester and an elastomeric waterproofing underlay. It is stated as certified to UNI 14540, fitted with UNI 804 couplings and bound according to UNI 7422, with the binding covers according to UNI 9487 M.I. The sheet states that it is made in Italy.

Basic is offered in two diameters on the same sheet: UNI 45 (code 10.0201.002, 45 mm) and UNI 70 (code 10.0201.005, 70 mm), both in 20 m lengths.

The UNI 70 size

The same sheet lists the 70 mm hose (code 10.0201.005), checked against the UNI 9487 requirements: burst pressure greater than 4.2 MPa, linear mass greater than 4.6 kg/m, proof pressure 2.4 MPa, nominal diameter 70 mm, ageing resistance 168 h, low temperature flexibility -20 C, hot surface resistance 200 C, minimum bend radius 1400 mm and detachment resistance greater than 15 N.

Photographs on the sheet may differ from the delivered product, as the maker states. The photo on this page is a family image of the Basic hose.

Where a Basic hose fits

General engineering note (not from the sheet): a lined polyester hose of this kind is a general purpose attack and supply line for fire brigades and site fire teams. For refinery or chemical duty the maker offers separate nitrile coated or rubber covered hoses (Super Jet, Yagom), which are not part of this page. Pair the hose with branches from the Fire Fighting category that match the 45 mm UNI coupling.

Ordering a hose needs four decisions: diameter (45 or 70 mm), length (20 m on the sheet), coupling type and the intended duty. The couplings in the photo are brass type; the sheet itself names the fittings as UNI 804 and does not describe the material, so confirm the coupling material with your inquiry. The linear mass is printed for the 70 mm hose only (above 4.6 kg/m), so weight for the 45 mm hose should be requested if needed for storage or reel planning.

The test figures on the sheet are the standard requirement values for the type, not individual batch results. If you need batch test certificates, ask for them in the quotation.

Pressure figures in bar and water volume

The sheet gives the pressures in MPa. Converted to bar, which most site crews read on their pump gauges, the 45 mm hose has a working pressure of 15 bar, a proof pressure of 22.5 bar, a kink resistance pressure of 22.5 bar and a burst pressure above 45 bar. The burst figure is therefore at least three times the working pressure. For the 70 mm hose on the same sheet, the proof pressure of 2.4 MPa equals 24 bar and the burst pressure of more than 4.2 MPa equals more than 42 bar.

The water held in a full length is useful for drainage and weight planning. Calculated from the nominal diameter (not printed on the sheet): a 20 m length of 45 mm hose holds about 32 l of water, and a 20 m length of 70 mm hose holds about 77 l. A charged 45 mm length is therefore roughly 32 kg heavier than when it is empty, plus the weight of the hose itself.

45 mm or 70 mm

General engineering note (not from the sheet): the 45 mm size is the usual attack line because it is light enough for one or two people to advance, while the 70 mm size is used as a supply line from a hydrant or pump to a dividing breeching or monitor, where its lower friction loss carries more water over distance. Many fire teams hold both, in the ratio set by their pre-incident plans.

Care, testing and storage

General engineering note (not from the sheet): after use, drain and wash the hose, especially after contact with fuel, foam or sea water, and dry it fully before rolling. Avoid storing hoses in direct sunlight; ultraviolet light and the high surface temperatures common in Oman and the GCC age both the jacket and the lining. Roll or fold the hose in different places from time to time so that the same fold lines are not always loaded, and check the coupling binding for slipping or corrosion. A periodic pressure test at working pressure, recorded in the hose register, is the common way to confirm that a length is still fit for service.

When ordering, state the diameter, the number of 20 m lengths, the coupling standard, and whether you need test certificates with the delivery.

Equipment that works with the Basic hose

A hose is only as useful as the fittings at each end. Items normally ordered with Basic hoses are branches with matching 45 mm UNI couplings, a dividing breeching when 70 mm supply lines are split into 45 mm attack lines, hose ramps for road crossings, hose straps and spanners for coupling and uncoupling under pressure, and wall cabinets or reels for fixed positions. For foam work the same hose carries foam solution between an inline mixer and a foam branch. Listing these items in one inquiry helps keep every coupling on site to the same standard and avoids the need for adaptors during an incident.
