Hypertherm XPR460 Plasma Cutting System

Description

460 A plasma for heavy plate, bevels and gouging

The Hypertherm XPR460 is the highest-power member of the XPR family, delivering up to 460 A and 102 kW for mechanized cutting of thick mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium. Oxygen cutting is available up to 460 A for mild steel, and production piercing reaches 50 mm. Severance is 90 mm on all three metal groups, extending to 100 mm in mild steel and 130 mm in stainless steel with argon-assist cutting.

Arc Response Technology intervenes in adverse events to protect consumables and the torch, and SureCut embeds advanced cutting processes so the operator selects material and thickness rather than tuning parameters. Embedded bevel compensation improves 45° bevel quality on thick plate, and automated gouging removes material for weld preparation with a wider, cleaner profile than carbon-arc gouging.

Where the XPR460 fits

The jump from 300 A to 460 A matters mostly above 38 mm. At 460 A the brochure lists 38 mm mild steel at 1370 mm/min, which makes plasma practical on plate that many shops would otherwise cut with oxy-fuel. For stainless steel the OptiMix console with H2-Ar-N2 at 460 A cuts 16 mm at about 5 m/min and 38 mm at 2.3 m/min, with severance to 90 mm.

The XPR460 uses the same four gas connect consoles as the rest of the XPR family, and the console choice decides which stainless steel and aluminium processes and which argon-assist functions are available. Wi-Fi and Ethernet LAN access to the web interface and MTConnect support allow remote monitoring and service diagnostics.

Planning should cover power supply footprint, forced-air cooling clearance, fume extraction sized for 460 A cutting, and a water table or downdraft capable of handling heavy dross. Consumable stock should be planned per current level, because each process in the cut chart uses its own nozzle, shield and electrode set. The brochure also lists the gas console as the factor that unlocks argon-assist piercing and severance, so buyers who need the full 100 mm mild steel or 130 mm stainless capability should specify CorePlus, VWI or OptiMix rather than the basic Core console.

About brand

Plasma cutting is the field Hypertherm has worked in since 1968, from Hanover, New Hampshire, USA. Its systems range from air plasma units carried by hand to mechanized plasma for CNC tables, backed by CNC controls, nesting software and torch consumables.

Seven Star LLC lists Hypertherm plasma cutting systems from the Powermax, HPR and XPR families and supplies them to fabricators and maintenance shops in Oman.

Hypertherm plasma families listed here

The number in each Hypertherm model name is its output current class in amperes:

  • Powermax30 XP and Powermax125: air plasma systems, from portable to heavy duty
  • Powermax65 SYNC and Powermax105 SYNC: the SYNC generation of Powermax
  • HPR400XD: HyPerformance mechanized plasma
  • XPR300: X-Definition mechanized plasma

The listing also includes the Powermax45 and 85 SYNC, XPR170 and XPR460. The manufacturer also lists HPR800XD and MAXPRO200, together with Duramax torches, EDGE Connect CNC and ProNest software.

Where Hypertherm systems are used

Hypertherm names heavy equipment, industrial pressure vessels, job shops, steel service centers, shipbuilding and structural steel as its main industries. Powermax units are used for hand cutting and gouging in workshops and on site, and can also be run on a cutting table with a machine torch. HPR and XPR systems are built into CNC machines for production cutting of plate, a common setup in GCC fabrication yards.

Ordering Hypertherm equipment and consumables: what we need

For a system, send the model, the input voltage and phases at your site, the torch type (hand or machine) and the lead length. Hypertherm sells most systems under a configuration part number, so send that number if you have it. For consumables, send the system model, the torch model, the cutting current and the process (cutting, gouging, shielded or fine cut), or simply the part numbers printed on the old parts. For mechanized systems, tell us the make of the cutting table and CNC.
