Bently Nevada 135489-04 3500/40M Proximitor Internal Barrier I/O

Description

Proximitor I/O with built-in intrinsic-safety barriers

The 135489-04 is the Proximitor I/O Module with Internal Barriers and Internal Terminations for the Bently Nevada 3500/40M Proximitor Monitor. It integrates the intrinsic-safety barriers for four proximity probe channels into the rear I/O module, so probes in a hazardous area can be wired to the rack without separate external barriers.

In the 3500/40M ordering code it is I/O module type 03, and Bently Nevada notes that the ATEX / IECEx / CSA Class 1, Zone 2 approval option (B = 02) is only available with this barrier I/O option. The datasheet refers to the 3500 Internal Barrier specification (document 141495) for the barrier details.

Using barrier I/O in hazardous-area installations

The barrier parameters above apply to the CSA-NRTL/C and ATEX / IECEx approvals listed in the datasheet. Because the barrier module is deeper than the standard I/O (163.1 mm against 99.1 mm) and the operating temperature range starts at 0 °C instead of -30 °C, check the rack location and cabinet conditions before switching from a non-barrier module.

As general practice, intrinsically safe loops must be installed to the manufacturer control drawing and the entity parameters of the field devices and cables must be verified against the values above.

How the Bently Nevada 135489-04 Fits in a 3500 System

The Bently Nevada 3500 system is a rack-based machinery protection system used on turbines, compressors, pumps and other critical rotating machines. Each monitor in the rack is a pair of modules: a front monitor module that processes the signals and an I/O module installed in the rear of the rack that terminates the field wiring. The 3500/40M Proximitor Monitor processes signals from proximity probe systems to measure radial vibration, thrust position, eccentricity and similar values. The 135489-04 is the rear I/O module for that monitor when the probes are in a hazardous area and internal intrinsic-safety barriers are required.

Proximity Probes and Proximitor Sensors

A proximity probe is a non-contact eddy-current sensor that measures the gap between its tip and a conductive shaft surface. The Proximitor sensor drives the probe and produces an output voltage proportional to the gap. Vibration is seen as a changing gap, while the average gap gives position. The Proximitor needs a supply voltage from the monitor, and its output is returned to the monitor through the I/O module.

Why Internal Barriers

Intrinsic safety limits the voltage and current that can reach a hazardous area so that sparks or hot surfaces cannot ignite a flammable atmosphere. Traditionally this is done with separate barriers in a marshalling cabinet. The 135489-04 places these barriers inside the I/O module, which reduces wiring, cabinet space and the number of termination points. The design must still be checked against the entity parameters of the probes, Proximitor sensors and cables.

Selection & Ordering Guide for the 135489-04

  • Confirm the installed monitor is a 3500/40M and that the I/O option is the internal-barrier version.
  • Check the hazardous-area approval required for your site against the approvals of the module.
  • Verify the operating temperature of the cabinet suits the narrower range of the barrier module.
  • Confirm rack depth and grounding arrangement for the barrier I/O, as described in the Bently Nevada documentation.

Our team can help confirm the correct ordering code for the 135489-04.

Installation & Maintenance

  • Follow the plant permit and bypass procedures before working on a machinery protection rack, because removing modules can affect trip logic.
  • Install the intrinsically safe wiring according to the manufacturer control drawing and local hazardous-area regulations.
  • Keep intrinsically safe and non-intrinsically safe wiring separated.
  • Ensure the intrinsic-safety earth connection is made as specified for barrier I/O.
  • After replacement, verify each channel with a test signal or calibrator and check the rack configuration.
  • Record module serial numbers and dates in the maintenance system.

Diagnostics and Troubleshooting

The 3500 system checks transducer circuits and can flag a channel as not OK when a probe, cable or Proximitor sensor is open, shorted or outside its normal gap range. When a channel alarms after a module change, first verify the field wiring, the probe gap voltage and the configuration in the 3500 Rack Configuration Software before assuming the new module is faulty. Keep a record of normal gap voltages for each channel, as this makes later fault-finding faster.

Spares Strategy

Because a failed I/O module can take channels of machine protection out of service, many sites hold at least one spare of each I/O type used in their racks. Spares should be stored in antistatic packaging in a dry, cool store, and their part numbers should be checked against the installed modules during each shutdown. Barrier and non-barrier I/O modules are not interchangeable in a hazardous-area design, so the correct variant must be stocked.

Typical Applications in Oman & the GCC

The 135489-04 is used where 3500 racks monitor machines with probes located in classified areas, such as gas compressors, gas turbines, pumps and expanders in oil and gas production, gas processing, refining, petrochemical and LNG facilities across Oman and the GCC.

About brand

Since 1961 Bently Nevada, of Minden, Nevada, USA, has been closely tied to two things: the eddy current proximity probe and the rack-based machinery protection system. The 3500 rack is found on turbines and compressors in most large process plants.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier of Bently Nevada 3500 monitor modules, interface and communication modules, proximity probes, accelerometers and velocity transducers for operators in Oman and the GCC, with every item matched to the full part number.

Ordering Bently Nevada parts: what we need

Send the complete part number with every option field, for example 330103-00-05-10-01-00 for a probe or the 3500 module number with its option dashes, plus the matching I/O module number. For probe systems state probe series, system length and the hazardous area approval. A photo of the label avoids transcription errors, and for rack modules the firmware revision is useful.
