Bently Nevada 3500 Modules Explained: Rack, Monitors, Relays & Spares

The Bently Nevada 3500 is a rack-based machinery protection system: one rack, one power supply pair, one communication module, and a set of monitor modules that each do a specific job. Choosing the right modules, and putting them in the right slots, is what separates a clean installation from a rack that cannot be expanded later. This guide explains what every common 3500 module does, how they fit together, and what to check before you order spares or build a new rack. The full system is described on our Bently Nevada 3500 Machinery Protection System page.

How a 3500 rack is organised

A 3500 rack has a fixed layout. Power supplies sit in two dedicated positions at the left of the rack. Next to them is the communication module (the Rack Interface Module or the Transient Data Interface), which normally takes the first monitor slot. The remaining full-height slots hold the monitor modules, and every monitor module has a matching I/O module at the back of the rack that carries the field wiring. When you order a spare, always confirm the I/O module type together with the monitor, because the pair has to match.

Power: 3500/15 AC/DC power supply

The 3500/15 power supply feeds the whole rack. Racks are normally fitted with two supplies so that one can carry the load if the other fails, which means a failed supply can be replaced without taking the machine protection offline. Specify the input type (AC or DC) that matches your plant supply before ordering.

Communication: 3500/20 RIM and 3500/22M TDI

The Rack Interface Module configures the rack and passes data to other systems. The 3500/22M Transient Data Interface does this over Ethernet and also collects the static, dynamic and transient data that Bently Nevada System 1 software uses for diagnostics. If your plant runs System 1 or plans to, the TDI is usually the right choice for the communication slot.

Reference signal: 3500/25 Keyphasor module

The 3500/25 Keyphasor module conditions the once-per-turn signal from the shaft. That signal gives the rack the machine speed and the phase reference, so other monitors can report vibration phase and order-tracked data. A rack that monitors rotating machinery almost always needs one, and machines with more than one shaft may need additional Keyphasor inputs.

Vibration and position monitors

  • 3500/40M Proximitor monitor: four-channel monitor for proximity probes. Used for radial vibration, axial (thrust) position and similar shaft measurements.
  • 3500/42M Proximitor/Seismic monitor: four-channel monitor that accepts both proximity probes and seismic transducers such as velocity sensors and accelerometers, so one module type can cover shaft and casing measurements.
  • 3500/45 Position monitor: four-channel module for position measurements such as axial position and differential expansion.
  • 3500/50M Tachometer module: two-channel speed monitor with zero-speed and rotor acceleration functions. Often used on machines that need an independent speed trip.
  • 3500/60 Temperature monitor: six-channel module for bearing and process temperature with RTD and thermocouple inputs.

Relay modules: acting on alarms

Monitors compare every measurement with Alert and Danger setpoints. To turn an alarm into a physical output (a trip, a horn, a DCS signal) you need relay modules. The 3500/32M provides four relays, and the 3500/33 provides sixteen. Relay logic can require several channels to agree before a trip, which is how the 3500 avoids false trips while still protecting the machine.

Sensors that feed the rack

The monitors are only as good as the transducers connected to them. A typical shaft vibration loop uses a 3300 XL 8 mm probe system with a matching 3300 XL Proximitor sensor. For casing vibration, a 330500 Velomitor sensor is a common choice. Probe length, cable length and Proximitor type must be matched, so check the full part number before ordering a replacement.

Checklist before you order a 3500 spare

  1. Read the full part number from the module label, including the option digits.
  2. Identify the matching I/O module (internal or external termination).
  3. Note the firmware and configuration, because a replacement must be configured to match the original.
  4. Confirm whether the module is for a protection function or a condition-monitoring function.
  5. Check the approvals required for your area (for example hazardous-area certification).

Frequently asked questions

Can I replace a 3500 module while the rack is running?

The 3500 is designed so that modules can be replaced with the rack powered, but you should follow the plant procedure and the manufacturer documentation, and account for the protection that the module provides while it is out of the rack.

Do I need a Keyphasor module?

If you need phase, speed-based or order-tracked data on a rotating machine, yes. Pure overall-vibration protection can work without phase data, but most turbomachinery racks include one.
