VEGA VEGABAR 28 Ceramic Cell Pressure Transmitter

Description

Overview

The VEGA VEGABAR 28 is a universally applicable pressure sensor with switching function and a ceramic measuring cell. VEGA positions it for measuring gases, vapours and liquids, and notes that even with high requirements for robustness and hygiene the device records measured values with high accuracy. The two-wire 4–20 mA version described in the specification sheet covers measuring ranges from -1 to +60 bar, with a smallest span of 0.1 bar and a deviation below 0.3 %, while three-wire electronics with IO-Link, active 4–20 mA and transistor outputs are also offered.

Seven Star LLC supplies the VEGA VEGABAR 28 to utilities, process plants, OEM machine builders and facility contractors in Oman and the GCC, from our office in Muscat. Typical uses range from pump discharge and filter differential monitoring at desalination plants to compressed air, steam and hygienic process lines in manufacturing.

Measurement Principle

As the VEGA specification sheet explains, the heart of the VEGA VEGABAR 28 is the pressure measuring cell, which transforms pressure into an electrical signal. The integrated electronics convert this pressure-dependent signal into a standardised output. The sensor element is the ceramic CERTEC measuring cell, which VEGA describes as having excellent long-term stability and high overload resistance.

As general engineering background, a dry capacitive ceramic cell has no oil fill behind a thin metal diaphragm, so there is no fill fluid that can leak into the process if the diaphragm is damaged, and the robust ceramic surface tolerates abrasive media and pressure spikes. VEGA highlights maximum overload and vacuum resistance of the ceramic cell as the basis for high plant availability. For level duties, the same transmitter can be mounted at the base of a vented tank to infer liquid height from hydrostatic pressure.

Engineering Design of the VEGA VEGABAR 28

The VEGA VEGABAR 28 is built as a compact stainless steel transmitter. Wetted parts are made of 316L, PVDF, duplex steel, PEEK or sapphire-ceramic, depending on the fitting, and the process seal is FKM, EPDM or FFKM. Process fittings start at G¼ and ¼ NPT threads and include hygienic fittings from DN 25; the drawing shows a G½ manometer connection to EN 837, a G1 thread to ISO 228-1 and a 2 inch clamp to DIN 32676 / ISO 2852 with a 64 mm diameter. An optional universal connection for hygienic adapters reduces installation effort and stockkeeping.

Electrical connection is via an ISO 4400 plug, an M12 x 1 plug or a direct cable outlet, with protection up to IP66/IP68 (0.5 bar) or IP66/IP67/IP69 and up to Type 6P to NEMA/UL 50E. The two-wire version operates from 12 to 35 V DC. A coloured 360° status indication shows the device condition at a glance, and the Bluetooth 5.0 version connects to smartphones, tablets and Windows PCs at a typical distance of 25 m for setup and diagnostics; PACTware with a DTM is an alternative.

Key Features

VEGA lists the following benefits for the VEGA VEGABAR 28.

  • The CERTEC ceramic measuring cell provides maximum overload and vacuum resistance for high plant availability.
  • Measuring ranges from -1 to +60 bar with a smallest span of 0.1 bar cover vacuum, low pressure and high pressure duties.
  • A deviation below 0.3 % gives dependable values for control and monitoring.
  • A coloured 360° status indication makes device status visible from every direction.
  • Wireless setup and diagnostics over Bluetooth with a smartphone simplify commissioning.
  • Two-wire 4–20 mA, IO-Link, active current and transistor electronics allow easy integration into many control systems.
  • Hygienic fittings, an optional hygienic adapter connection and SIP capability of +150 °C suit food and pharmaceutical lines.
  • Protection up to IP68 (0.5 bar) or IP69 and Type 6P suits outdoor and washdown areas.

Industrial Applications

Within Oman and the GCC, the VEGA VEGABAR 28 suits pressure measurement on RO feed and permeate lines, booster pump discharge headers, cartridge filter housings, cooling water circuits in district cooling plants, compressed air networks and hydrostatic level measurement in vented water tanks. The ceramic cell is well matched to seawater, brine and slurry service because it resists abrasion and does not rely on an oil-filled diaphragm. In oil and gas utilities, the VEGA VEGABAR 28 can monitor instrument air, nitrogen blanketing, firewater ring mains and chemical injection pump suction, where a compact, low-cost device with a clear local status signal saves panel space and wiring effort. Food and beverage plants in the Rusayl and Salalah industrial areas can use the hygienic versions on process lines that are cleaned and sterilised in place.

Seven Star LLC supplies the VEGA VEGABAR 28 to these users across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC and can offer related VEGA pressure products where a project needs more, such as the VEGA VEGABAR 82 process pressure transmitter with a larger housing and display options, the VEGA VEGABAR 64 pressure transmitter, or a VEGA VEGADIS 176 loop display for a local reading of a blind transmitter.

About brand
Yellow housings on tanks and silos usually mean VEGA. The company, founded in 1959 in Schiltach in Germany's Black Forest, concentrates on level, point level and pressure measurement. Seven Star LLC lists VEGA radar and guided wave radar level sensors, vibrating and capacitive level switches, pressure transmitters and display units, and sources them for process plants and utilities in Oman.

VEGA product families on this page

VEGA product names state the measuring principle:
  • VEGAPULS: non-contact radar level sensors, including VEGAPULS 6X, VEGAPULS 64, VEGAPULS 69 and the compact VEGAPULS C21
  • VEGAFLEX 81 and 86: guided wave radar level sensors, and VEGAPASS 81, a bypass tube that is combined with a VEGAFLEX to measure outside the vessel
  • VEGASWING 61 and 63: vibrating fork level switches for liquids
  • VEGAPOINT 21: compact capacitive point level switch
  • VEGABAR 82: process pressure transmitter with ceramic measuring cell
  • VEGADIS 176: external display for 4-20 mA loops
Most VEGA transmitters share the plics modular concept: housing, electronics and the PLICSCOM display module are common across measuring principles, which keeps spare parts simple.

Where VEGA sensors and transmitters are used

VEGA level transmitters are common on crude and product tanks, separators, chemical storage, water and wastewater basins, and cement or aggregate silos across the GCC. Vibrating switches serve as overfill and dry-run protection on pumps and vessels. VEGA pressure transmitters measure process pressure and hydrostatic level in liquids and gases.

Ordering VEGA instruments: what we need

A VEGA device is fully described by its order code and serial number. A code such as FX81.ICEAIFAXKMAM starts with the device type (FX81 is a VEGAFLEX 81, PS64 a VEGAPULS 64, B82 a VEGABAR 82) and continues with letters for approval, process fitting, seal, electronics and housing. Send that code, or the serial number from the type label, and we can check the exact build in VEGA documentation. For a new point, add the medium, vessel height, nozzle size, pressure, temperature and area classification.
