Elcometer 319 Dewpoint Meter
Overview
The Elcometer 319 Dewpoint Meter is a rugged hand-held instrument that measures and records the climatic conditions needed to decide whether a surface is ready for painting. It measures relative humidity, air temperature and surface temperature, and it calculates dewpoint and the difference between surface temperature and dewpoint, together with dry bulb, wet bulb and specific humidity. Elcometer designed the Elcometer 319 for coating inspectors who must prove, at each stage of a job, that steel is far enough above dewpoint to avoid condensation under the coating. The meter is dustproof and waterproof with fully sealed sensors, equivalent to IP66, and it meets ISO 8502-4.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Elcometer 319 to painting contractors, inspection companies, shipyards and maintenance teams across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. Our Muscat team helps buyers choose between Model S and Model T and the right external probes, and we offer engineering support in Muscat for meters and accessories.
Measurement Principle of the Elcometer 319
As general background, dewpoint is the temperature at which moisture in the air begins to condense. If a steel surface is at or close to the dewpoint, a thin film of water can form on it, which harms adhesion and can cause early coating failure. Coating specifications therefore usually set a minimum margin between surface temperature and dewpoint, and ISO 8502-4 gives guidance on estimating the probability of condensation before coating. The Elcometer 319 measures relative humidity and air temperature with its built-in sensors, computes the dewpoint from them, and reads the surface temperature with its integral sensor or an external probe.
The meter then shows the margin, called T delta, directly on screen. Users can set high and low limits for any parameter, and the Elcometer 319 gives visual, audible and red or green LED alarms when a limit is crossed. Arrow indicators show whether temperatures are rising or falling, and a hold function freezes a reading so it can be reviewed before it is stored. An integrated K-type connector accepts an external thermocouple, so the Te mode turns the gauge into a thermometer, for example to check paint temperature before application.
Engineering Design of the Elcometer 319
The Elcometer 319 has a clear illuminated display that can show up to five user-selected parameters, an intuitive menu in multiple languages and readings switchable between Celsius and Fahrenheit. All readings are time and date stamped. Power comes from two AA batteries or directly through the USB cable. Elcometer quotes more than 40 hours of manual use with the backlight off, and up to 400 hours in interval logging at one reading every 10 minutes. The meter measures 180 by 75 by 35 mm and weighs 300 g, and Elcometer states it is safe to use between minus 20 and plus 80 °C.
Integrated magnets let the user fix the Elcometer 319 to a steel substrate during remote logging, and the K-type connector allows a separate magnetic surface probe to measure surface temperature while the meter logs on its own. Model T logs at intervals adjustable between one second and 24 hours and stores 25,000 records in up to 999 batches, while Model S keeps the last 10 records. Data from Model T can be sent by USB or Bluetooth to a computer, Android or iOS device and imported into ElcoMaster for reporting.
Key Features
The Elcometer 319 gives coating inspectors the following capabilities:
- One instrument measures RH, air temperature and surface temperature and calculates dewpoint, T delta, dry bulb, wet bulb and specific humidity.
- Air and surface temperature are measured from -20 to +80 °C with plus or minus 0.5 °C accuracy and 0.1 °C resolution.
- Relative humidity is measured from 0 to 100% RH with plus or minus 3% RH accuracy.
- User limits trigger visual, audible and LED alarms on any parameter.
- Model T works as a remote logger with intervals from one second to 24 hours and 25,000 records in 999 batches.
- Integrated magnets and a K-type input allow unattended logging on steel structures.
- Sealed sensors and an IP66-equivalent housing suit blasting and painting sites.
- Each meter is supplied with a calibration certificate, and Elcometer quotes a warranty that can be extended to two years.
Industrial Applications
Climatic checks are required by most protective coating specifications, by IMO PSPC rules for ballast tanks, and by US Navy procedures listed in the Elcometer datasheet, which also names BS 7079-B4, IMO MSC.215(82), IMO MSC.244(83) and ISO 8502-4. The Elcometer 319 is used before blasting and between coats on pipelines, tanks, structural steel, offshore modules and ship hulls, and in logging mode it records conditions overnight inside tanks or enclosures where curing depends on temperature and humidity.
In Oman, coastal humidity in Muscat, Sohar, Duqm and Salalah can push steel close to dewpoint in the early morning and evening, especially during the khareef season in Dhofar, so documented readings matter for coating warranties. Seven Star LLC supplies the Elcometer 319 together with related instruments such as the Vaisala DMT152 dew point transmitter for fixed process monitoring, the Vaisala HMP7 humidity and temperature probe and the Yowexa EC-900 coating thickness gauge for dry film checks.
Models and Accessories
Elcometer offers the meter as Model S (G319—-S) and Model T (G319—-T). Both measure all parameters, show statistics, use magnets and alarms and accept K-type probes. Model T adds the 25,000-record memory, interval logging, USB and Bluetooth output and ElcoMaster software with a USB cable. Accessories listed by Elcometer include the T31920162 magnetic surface temperature probe rated from -40 to +80 °C, a liquid temperature probe, a USB cable, a wrist strap and a protective carry case. Elcometer notes an accuracy of plus or minus 2 °C when K-type probes supplied by Elcometer are used in Te mode.
