Pall Profile Coreless Filter Elements for Gas Filtration

Description

Overview

The Pall Profile Coreless filter element combines the Pall Profile depth filter technology with a design that eliminates the internal core, giving a convenient, cost efficient and environmentally friendly solution for high flow rate applications. The large-diameter element uses a low differential pressure polypropylene or polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) medium, so fewer elements are needed for a given flow rate, filter vessels are correspondingly smaller, and capital, installation and operating costs fall. The Pall Profile Coreless element is particularly suited to gas filtration, where experience shows that the solid contaminants are very small, typically in the micron and sub-micron range.

Seven Star LLC supplies Pall Profile Coreless elements to gas transmission, gas processing, refining and power operators in Oman and the GCC. Replacement orders are normally placed by element part number such as EBPSAH, EBPSAH1 or EFPSMEF, and the Muscat team checks the material, length and removal rating against the existing housing and the operating temperature before issuing a quotation.

Depth Filtration Principle

The Pall Profile Coreless element uses a continuous graded pore structure. The coarser outer region works as a built-in prefilter that captures larger particles, while the tighter inner section removes the fine particles, so the contaminant is spread through the thickness of the medium instead of blinding the surface. Pall describes this combination as giving low clean differential pressure, high flow rates and long service life, which is important on gas lines where pressure drop directly costs compression energy.

Removal ratings in gases are determined with a sodium chloride aerosol challenge at 0.3 micron. For the Profile Coreless elements listed in the data sheet the figures are 99.997 percent for part number EBPSAH, 99.995 percent for EBPSAH1 and 99.999 percent for EFPSMEF. Because gas-borne solids such as black powder are extremely fine and abrasive, a filter with this removal efficiency and a low starting pressure drop helps protect compressors, turbines, meters, regulators and control valves downstream.

Engineering Design of the Pall Profile Coreless

The element slides over a 316L stainless steel core that stays inside the filter housing. At change-out the used element is simply pulled up over the core, which is then ready to accept the replacement element, so the Pall Profile Coreless design greatly reduces the amount of waste to be handled and disposed of. The elements are fully disposable, are manufactured to a high standard of quality assurance and cleanliness, and are produced in accordance with BS EN ISO 9001:2008 according to the data sheet.

The nominal element is 1016 mm (40 inch) long with an outside diameter of 152 mm (6 inch) and an inside diameter of 114 mm (4.5 inch). The polypropylene version is rated for a maximum differential pressure of 4.0 bard (58 psid) at 30 degC (86 degF) and 1.0 bard (14.5 psid) at 82 degC (179.6 degF), while the PPS version is rated for 4.0 bard at 20 degC (68 degF) and 1.0 bard at 204 degC (400 degF). The data sheet includes air flow versus differential pressure curves for both media and a viscosity correction method for other gases.

Key Features

The Pall Profile Coreless element is chosen for gas filtration duties because of these capabilities:

  • Large diameter cartridge using low differential pressure medium for high flow rate capability.
  • Separate 316L stainless steel core retained in the housing, which cuts disposal waste.
  • Proven depth filter technology with a continuous graded pore structure.
  • Polypropylene or polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) filter media to suit temperature and chemistry.
  • Fully disposable element design with reliable, consistent and verifiable filtration performance.
  • Removal ratings of 99.997, 99.995 and 99.999 percent at 0.3 micron in gases by sodium chloride aerosol test.
  • Smaller filter systems and lower capital, installation and operating cost than conventional cartridge arrays.
  • Manufactured in accordance with BS EN ISO 9001:2008 quality assurance.

Industrial Applications

Pall cites several gas applications where the Pall Profile Coreless element has been used successfully: removal of black powder from gas pipelines carrying raw gas, dry gas and ethane; removal of desiccant fines from gas drying units on dry gas and regeneration gas; and removal of catalyst and activated carbon fines from mercury guard beds. In each case the element protects critical downstream equipment and units from very fine solids that would otherwise erode compressors, foul instruments or contaminate catalysts.

Gas networks in the Sultanate of Oman, including transmission pipelines, processing plants and power generation fuel gas skids in Sohar, Salalah and the interior, face similar contamination risks as pipelines age and gas dehydration systems wear. Seven Star LLC can quote Pall Profile Coreless elements together with related products such as the Parker 9000040001 coalescing filter element, the Spirax Sarco CSF16 steam filter and the Bosch Rexroth R928006678 hydraulic filter element, and our engineers can discuss housing compatibility and change-out planning.

About brand
Filtration and separation of process fluids is the whole of Pall's business. The company was founded in 1946, and in oil and gas, refining, chemical and power plants its elements sit ahead of compressors, contactors, burners and injection wells. Seven Star LLC lists Pall Ultipleat High Flow cartridges and housings, Profile Coreless gas filter elements and Medallion coalescer elements, and supplies them to plants in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier.

Pall filter families listed here

Ultipleat High Flow is a large-diameter, coreless pleated cartridge built to carry a high flow per element, so a housing needs far fewer cartridges than a conventional design. The matching Ultipleat High Flow housings are the vessels these cartridges seal into. Profile Coreless elements are depth filters that slide over a reusable metal core, which leaves only the filter media to dispose of at change-out. Medallion elements are coalescers: they merge fine droplets into drops large enough to drain away.

Where Pall elements are used

Typical duties are particle removal from amine, glycol, condensate and water streams, black powder and fines removal from gas lines, and liquid removal ahead of compressors and molecular sieve beds.

Ordering Pall filter elements: what we need

Send the full Pall part number from the element end cap or the housing nameplate. If it cannot be read, give the housing model, element length and diameter, micron rating, seal material, the fluid and the operating temperature.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Pall Profile Coreless elements used for?
They are used in gas filtration where fine solids are present, for example black powder in gas pipelines, desiccant fines from gas drying units and catalyst or activated carbon fines from mercury guard beds.
What does coreless mean for the element?
The element has no internal core of its own. It fits over a 316L stainless steel core that remains in the housing, so at change-out the used element is pulled off and a new one is fitted, which reduces waste and disposal cost.
What removal efficiency can I expect?
The data sheet lists 99.997 percent for EBPSAH, 99.995 percent for EBPSAH1 and 99.999 percent for EFPSMEF at 0.3 micron in gases, determined with a sodium chloride aerosol challenge.
Which media suits high temperature gas?
The PPS media is rated for a differential pressure of 1.0 bard at 204 degC, while the polypropylene media is rated for 1.0 bard at 82 degC. Always check chemical compatibility with the gas stream and condensates.
