Masoneilan 79003 Series VRT Anti-Cavitation Angle Control Valve
Overview
The Masoneilan 79003 Series is an angle-style, anti-cavitation control valve fitted with the Variable Resistance Trim, or VRT, that Baker Hughes designed for severe liquid pressure letdown. The Baker Hughes catalogs describe it as a valve for anti-cavitation service with control over a wide range of operating conditions, such as the ramp-up transition of a normal feedwater pump, and they name feedwater control and feedwater pump start-up as its applications. The manual classes the series among Baker Hughes Energy Management control valves and gives an estimated useful life of more than 25 years when it is inspected annually and installed without piping stress.
As the official trusted supplier for Masoneilan, Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 79003 to power and desalination plants and to process customers across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. Boiler feed systems in the region run continuously at high pressure and tolerate very little valve downtime, so our instrumentation division in Muscat helps engineers review the feedwater duty, the trim size and the actuator before a quotation is requested.
Variable Resistance Trim Operating Principle
Cavitation begins when the pressure inside a valve falls below the vapour pressure of the liquid and then recovers downstream, collapsing the vapour bubbles against metal surfaces. The Masoneilan 79003 avoids this with a multi-stage VRT design in which a stack of plates sits around the plug and the pressure drop is divided across several stages, so that no single stage takes the whole differential and the local pressure stays above the vapour pressure of the fluid. The stack plate assembly, seat ring and their gaskets are individually listed parts in the manual, which makes the trim serviceable.
The Baker Hughes brochure describes the series as designed for control over a wide range of operating conditions, such as the ramp-up transition of a normal feedwater pump. That is why the Masoneilan 79003 is named for feedwater pump start-up, where flow and pressure drop change quickly while the plant is brought up to speed. The manual specifies that the valve is always installed with flow tending to open the plug, and it lists the stack plates, seat ring and gaskets as separate parts that can be inspected and replaced.
Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 79003
The standard Masoneilan 79003 is designed with a forged angle block body and flanged ends with contoured faces. The 6 inch (150 mm) size can also be supplied with a cast angle flanged body, and on request some sizes can be supplied with a cast globe body and flanged or welded ends. The body is rated to ASME Class 2500, though the manual points out that the real rating is restricted by the class of the end connections. Plug construction uses a balanced plug except in the smallest sizes: the numbering system defines plug type 1 as unbalanced, available only in the 1 and 1.5 inch sizes, and plug type 2 as balanced.
Seat construction is either metal or a PTFE soft seat ring, and the seat ring and plate stack are sealed with dedicated gaskets, with a Tec-seal ring and back-up rings in the 2 to 6 inch sizes. The plug is pinned to the stem, and the manual gives a detailed procedure for matching the pin hole and for chamfering the shank. The numbering system pairs the body with a Type 37 or Type 38 spring-diaphragm actuator, one for direct and one for reverse action, and the catalogs also list piston cylinder actuators. Air connections follow the Masoneilan standard of a quarter inch NPT supply.
Key Features
The following features, from the Baker Hughes instruction manual and catalogs, explain why the Masoneilan 79003 is specified for feedwater and other cavitating services:
- Variable Resistance Trim built around a plate stack divides the pressure drop across several stages to prevent cavitation damage.
- Designed for control over a wide range of conditions, including the ramp-up transition of a normal feedwater pump.
- The angle body style of the Masoneilan 79003 suits feedwater piping that must turn the flow and gives a compact, robust forged block construction.
- Balanced plug construction on the Masoneilan 79003 reduces actuator thrust on all but the smallest sizes, while 1 and 1.5 inch valves use an unbalanced plug.
- Metal seat or PTFE soft seat constructions give seat leakage of Class V or Class VI, as listed in the Baker Hughes catalogs.
- Body ratings from Class 600 through 2500, with UNI-DIN 100 through 400 connections, cover high-pressure boiler feed systems.
- The replaceable seat ring, plate stack, gaskets and packing of the Masoneilan 79003 allow the trim to be refurbished without replacing the body.
- Multi-spring diaphragm or piston cylinder actuators can be fitted, with an air supply connection of a quarter inch NPT.
- The manual estimates a useful life of more than 25 years with annual inspection, routine maintenance and correct installation.
Industrial Applications
The principal duty for the Masoneilan 79003 is feedwater control and the start-up of boiler feed pumps, which is where large pressure drops occur at low flow and where a cavitating valve can destroy its trim in a short time. In Oman, combined-cycle power stations, steam generators serving desalination plants and refinery utility boilers all operate feedwater circuits of this kind. Baker Hughes names feedwater control and feedwater pump start-up as the applications, and any other high-pressure liquid letdown duty should be referred to Baker Hughes for sizing before it is specified.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 79003 and the equipment that surrounds it. The Baker Hughes catalog lists multi-spring diaphragm and piston cylinder actuators for the series, and the Masoneilan range includes the Masoneilan Type 87/88 spring-diaphragm actuators and the Masoneilan Type 51/52/53 piston actuators; the exact actuator is confirmed against the numbering system in the manual. A Masoneilan SVI3 digital valve positioner can be added for positioning.

Masoneilan control valves and actuator series
The globe valve listing centers on the 21000 series, including the cryogenic version with extension bonnet, and the 41005 cage-guided series in high pressure, API 6A and VRT anti-cavitation executions. The 80385 and 80386 are three-way combining and diverting valves. Rotary products include the 35002 Camflex II and the 37002 MiniTork II butterfly control valve. Actuators cover spring-diaphragm, cylinder and rack-and-pinion designs, among them the 5A cylinder actuator for Camflex II. Masoneilan also makes pressure regulators, SVI digital valve positioners and displacer-type level instruments, and offers Lo-dB trim for noise control.Where Masoneilan valves are used
Throttling duty on steam, hydrocarbons, gas and water is the daily work of these valves: feedwater and steam conditioning in power plants, separator and compressor loops in gas processing, high pressure drop letdown, cryogenic service in LNG and air separation, and general flow, pressure and level control in refineries and chemical plants.Ordering Masoneilan valves and spare parts: what we need
For spare parts the serial number is decisive, since the factory record behind it lists trim, materials and actuator. Send a clear nameplate photo with serial number, model number, size and pressure class. For a new valve add the process data: fluid, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, required leakage class, fail position, air supply and control signal.Browse Masoneilan products by category: Control Valves, Valve Actuator, Regulators, Valve Positioner, Level Transmitter.
