Overview
The Shinkawa VM-5T Thrust Position Module monitors axial displacement (thrust position) in rotating machinery as part of the VM-5 series machinery protection system. It provides precise measurement of shaft thrust position, helping prevent mechanical failures caused by excessive axial movement in turbines and compressors.
The module supports multiple measurement ranges including -0.5 to +0.5 mm, -1.0 to +1.0 mm, and -2.0 to +2.0 mm, and is compatible with VK-202A, VK-302P, FK-202F, and FK-602F sensors.
Engineering & Design
The VM-5T accepts signals from eddy-current displacement sensors and converts them into a measured thrust position value, displayed locally and made available as recorder outputs in 4-20mA DC, 1-5V DC, and other output forms for data logging and trending.
Alarm functions include DANGER, ALERT, and OK levels with adjustable thresholds and relay modes configurable as normally energized or de-energized. The module operates on 85-264VAC or 24VDC, providing flexibility across different plant electrical supplies.

The Shinkawa VM-5T thrust position monitor measures the axial displacement of the rotor against the thrust bearing of the turbine and the compressor. The eddy current probe is mounted in the axial direction at the bearing housing, and the gap voltage is converted into the position reading on the front panel. The monitor drives the alarm relays with the two independent set points for the alert and the trip level of the machine.
The VM-5T monitor provides the linear gap readout for the axial position of the rotor and includes the bar graph display for the quick judgement of the machine state. The two relay set points are programmed independently for the thrust warning and the trip, and the dead band prevents the chattering of the alarm at the set point. The monitor is used together with the VM-5K vibration cards in the same rack of the compressor train.
