SHINKAWA VM-5P3-1-00-00-0/IS0 Phase Marker Module
Description
Overview
The Shinkawa VM-5P3 is a Phase Marker Unit designed for the VM-5 series machinery protection system, converting keyphasor signals from rotating machinery probes into shaped pulses for speed measurement, phase referencing, and diagnostic analysis.
With a 2-channel input and buffered pulse outputs, the VM-5P3 delivers reliable phase reference signals essential for shaft vibration analysis and balance monitoring of turbomachinery in power, oil, and gas applications.
Engineering & Design
The unit accepts keyphasor signals from eddy-current displacement sensors such as the VK-202A and RD-05A targets, with an input impedance of approximately 10k ohm and 2 available channels for redundancy or multi-keyway monitoring.
Signal conditioning shapes the raw keyphasor pulse and drives a 50-ohm impedance buffer output, delivering a clean, stable phase marker to the VM-5 monitor channels for synchronous vibration analysis.

Confirming the VM-5P3 Configuration
The full model code of this unit, VM-5P3-1-00-00-0/IS0, defines its options, so a replacement should be matched character for character. Before ordering, record the complete code from the module label, the rack type (VM-5H or VM-5W; the unit is not used in VM-5G racks), the keyphasor probe and driver models, and which monitors take the phase reference. Also note the shaft target geometry, such as a keyway or raised key, because it affects the pulse the unit has to shape.
Installation and Commissioning
- Plan the work with operations, since removing the phase marker affects phase and speed data used by the monitors and any connected diagnostic system.
- Check the keyphasor probe gap with the machine stopped, making sure the probe sees both the shaft surface and the notch or key within its linear range.
- Terminate probe cables with correct shield grounding, at one end only, to avoid ground loops.
- With the machine running, check the pulse on the buffered output with an oscilloscope: one clean pulse per revolution, without double triggering.
- Confirm that the speed shown by the monitors matches an independent reading, and that the System OK contacts are healthy.
Troubleshooting Phase Marker Problems
Missing or unstable phase readings usually trace back to the probe side: wrong gap, runout at the target, damaged or oily targets, or loose connectors in junction boxes. Double pulses per revolution often come from a target with sharp edges or surface defects that the probe also detects. If the input signal is clean but the output is not, then the module itself is the suspect. Recording the probe gap voltage at commissioning gives a useful baseline for later fault finding.
Applications in Oman and the GCC
Phase reference is essential for balancing, run-up and coast-down analysis on gas and steam turbines, generators and centrifugal compressors in the region’s power, desalination, refining and LNG facilities. Many plants run VM-5 systems that have been in service for years, so keeping a spare phase marker unit available helps avoid losing phase data during critical diagnostic work.

How a Shinkawa protection chain works
An eddy current probe sits a set distance from the shaft. Its driver (converter) turns the gap into a voltage, and the monitor turns that voltage into vibration, thrust position or speed values with alert and danger set points. The probe, extension cable and driver are calibrated together for one total system length and one target material, usually AISI 4140 shaft steel. Changing one part without matching the other two shifts the calibration. The monitor relays feed the turbine or compressor trip logic, and buffered outputs go to analysis systems. Many protection systems of this kind are specified to API 670.
Where Shinkawa vibration monitoring is used
Shinkawa systems measure shaft vibration, axial (thrust) position, speed, phase reference and bearing temperature on steam turbines, gas turbines, generators, compressors, pumps and fans. In the GCC they are found mainly in power stations, desalination plants, refineries and petrochemical units with Japanese or Korean machinery packages.
Ordering Shinkawa parts: what we need
Shinkawa model codes are long and every field counts. A monitor code such as VM-5K-411512-000-000-111-0/IS0/EX5 defines the input type, range, options and suffix codes, so copy the complete string from the module label, including everything after the slashes. For sensors, send the VL or FK model code, probe tip diameter, cable length and the matching driver or converter model, since the probe, extension cable and driver work as a calibrated set. A serial number and a photo of the label help us confirm the item in the manufacturer's documentation. Where a model is no longer produced, we propose the successor the manufacturer names.
