Samson TROVIS 3797 PROFINET Smart Valve Positioner

Description

TROVIS 3797 smart positioner with PROFINET over Ethernet-APL

The Samson TROVIS 3797 is an electropneumatic smart positioner that mounts on pneumatic control valves and keeps the valve position in line with the set point sent by the control system. It is the PROFINET generation of the TROVIS family: the set point arrives over Ethernet-APL, the device is powered from the same two-wire connection, and all parameters can be read and changed over PROFINET. Seven Star LLC supplies the TROVIS 3797 in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier based in Muscat.

Single-acting or double-acting operation is possible, travel from 3.6 to 300 mm and opening angles from 24 to 170 degrees are covered, the device is Ethernet-APL certified and certified according to PA Profile 4, and the unit calibrates itself to the valve and actuator it is mounted on. The 3797 is the choice when a plant is moving its field level to Ethernet and wants valve diagnostics delivered over the same network.

How the TROVIS 3797 positions a valve

A non-contact travel sensor reads the valve stem or shaft position, which reaches the sensor through the pick-up lever. A microcontroller runs a PID algorithm that compares this measured position with the set point from the control system. When they differ, the pneumatic module either vents the actuator or fills it with air until the plug or disc reaches the requested position.

The pneumatic side is modular. Up to two pneumatic modules sit in slots A and B, each built around a microcontroller that drives an i/p converter with a downstream spool valve. A dummy module must close the second slot when only one module is installed, and the article codes for the modules are P3799-0000 for the dummy and P3799-0001 for the output 138 and output 238 module. Sealing one of the two outputs gives single-acting operation. Air flow at the outputs can be restricted by software, which helps tune small actuators without fitting external restrictors.

Where the 3797 fits among TROVIS and Type positioners

The 3797 is the PROFINET device in a wider Samson positioner offering that also includes the Ex d TROVIS SAFE 3731-3 for flameproof installations, and the pneumatic Type 3766 and electropneumatic Type 3767. Accessories used in the same loops include the Type 3755 volume booster for large actuators and the Type 3709 lock-up valve for fail-in-place behaviour. Pick the 3797 when the control system speaks PROFINET and APL switches are available; choose a HART device when the loop is still two-wire analogue.

Mounting kits cover direct attachment to the Type 3277 actuator (240 to 750 cm²), NAMUR attachment to the rib or yoke, rotary actuators per VDI/VDE 3845 with lever sizes M, L, XL and XXL, and a VDI/VDE 3847 version that lets the positioner be swapped while the process runs because air is blocked in the actuator.

Selection checklist for the TROVIS 3797

  • Control network: confirm the system supports PROFINET over Ethernet-APL and that an APL field switch with a suitable port profile (SLAA) is installed.
  • Actuator type: single-acting spring-return, double-acting, or an actuator with a safety function that needs the fail-in-place module.
  • Actuator volume and speed: choose kVS 0.35 or 0.7 modules, or two modules, according to stroking time.
  • Attachment: direct on Type 3277, NAMUR rib, rod-type yoke to IEC 60534-6-1, VDI/VDE 3845 rotary, or VDI/VDE 3847.
  • Hazardous area: select the ATEX, IECEx or CCC/NEPSI code field that matches the zone and local requirement, and check the temperature class limits.
  • Environment: aluminium or stainless housing, and whether the cover needs a window for local reading.
  • Supply air: 2.5 to 10 bar of clean, dry instrument air meeting ISO 8573-1 classes.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the 3797

Mount the positioner on a clean, rigid bracket and set the lever to match the travel or angle, then connect supply air and the output piping. Electrical connection is a two-wire APL cable with reverse polarity protection. Initialisation is started from the rotary pushbutton or from the control system, and four initialisation modes are available. A substitution mode lets the positioner start while the plant runs without moving the valve, which is useful in emergency repair situations.

On site, a single rotary pushbutton and a plain-text display show the NAMUR NE 107 states and the menu, and the reading direction can be turned by 180 degrees. Parameters are held in non-volatile memory. For maintenance, use the EXPERTplus diagnostics, the pressure sensor readings for supply and signal pressure, continuous zero monitoring and the operating-hours counter to schedule work. Keep a spare pneumatic module of the type installed on the shelf for critical valves. The device can also be configured from a laptop over the SSP interface with the TROVIS-VIEW software.

Typical 3797 applications in Oman and the GCC

Positioners with network communication are increasingly specified for new process units in oil and gas processing, power generation, desalination and petrochemical plants in Oman and the wider Gulf. High ambient temperature, dust and humidity make the wide operating range and IP66 protection relevant, while diagnostic messages reduce the need to walk the plant to check control valves. Typical valves include globe, rotary plug and butterfly control valves in cooling water, boiler feed, chemical dosing and utility air services.

Samson valve, actuator and positioner types

Samson builds a control valve from modules. The Type 3241 globe valve is the general-service body of Series 240, and the Type 3251 is the Series 250 body for higher pressure ratings. Either one is combined with a Type 3271 pneumatic diaphragm actuator or a Type 3277, whose yoke allows the positioner to be attached directly with a concealed travel linkage.

Among the positioners listed are the Type 3725 and the Type 3730 family: the 3730-1 as the basic electropneumatic version, sold in its current generation as TROVIS 3730-1, and the 3730-3 with HART communication and valve diagnostics. Samson also makes PROFIBUS PA and FOUNDATION fieldbus variants in the same family, plus self-operated pressure and temperature regulators.

Where Samson valves are used

Samson control valves throttle steam, gas and liquids in chemical and petrochemical units, refineries, gas processing, power stations, water and desalination plants, and food production. Many reach site as part of a skid or package, so the plant instrument team often meets them first when a positioner or actuator needs replacing. We supply these items to end users and contractors throughout the GCC.
