Description

The IMI STI SHP-SIS is a smart, high-performance digital pneumatic positioner engineered for safety instrumented systems (SIS). It provides the safety function for blowdown and emergency shutdown valve actuation in critical on/off applications, and it includes built-in partial stroke testing (PST) so that functional safety requirements and preventive maintenance can be handled by one device.

A patented algorithm and flow system give ultra-fast stroking times, with supply and exhaust Cv of 2.3 in the high flow configuration (a low flow 0.3 option is mentioned). A tough touch screen gives complete access to configuration, calibration and PST, and NE107-compliant status alerts show on screen for tool-free troubleshooting. The travel sensor is a contactless 3D sensor with 360 degree reading, so no alignment or pre-defined position is needed at installation. The electronics are fully encapsulated and tested for high vibration.

Direct or reverse mode can be set without changing mechanical parts. In reverse mode the PST device does not impair valve functionality and the safety valve stays under control of the solenoid valve, which avoids unexpected trips from the test. Pressure, travel and time limits can abort a PST to protect the safety function, a TEST SOV feature is available, and the digital twin function offers seamless online swap-over and a complete digital inventory of configuration and performance history. The brochure states TUV certified safety performance, and that the positioner is certified to IEC 61508:2010 up to SIL 3 for electrical and pneumatic DETT.

Selection notes for safety loops

Before ordering, confirm the SIL target and proof-test philosophy, whether the positioner is wired in direct or reverse PST arrangement with the solenoid valve, actuator type, stroke and single or double acting, the supply gas and pressure, Ex ia or Ex d, housing material and the certificate set. Safety figures such as failure rates and proof-test intervals are not in the brochure, so request the safety manual and certificate for the exact configuration, and ask the manufacturer for the application limits.
