Posi Lock PHA-108 10-Ton 3-Jaw Hydraulic Puller

The Posi Lock PHA-108 is a three-jaw, 10-ton hydraulic puller built around the Posi Lock Safety Cage, the jaw-guiding frame that keeps the arms square to the shaft while force is applied. It is a compact size for removing bearings, gears, sprockets and couplings from motor, pump and gearbox shafts in a plant workshop or on site.

A compact 10-ton puller for bearings and gears

The PHA-108 pairs a Safety Cage jaw head with a hydraulic cylinder, so the operator pushes against the shaft end instead of hammering or levering. Three jaws spread the load evenly around the component. The maker recommends a three-jaw puller wherever possible for a more secure grip, a more even pulling force and better stability.

The cage allows the jaws to be set between 0.75 and 12 inches apart, which covers many standard bearing, hub and coupling diameters on industrial motors, process pumps, fans and gearboxes. The jaw tips are specified with 0.29 in. of clearance and 0.27 in. of tip depth, which tells you how much free space is needed behind a bearing ring or gear face to seat them.

Choosing and using the puller

The instruction sheet gives a sizing rule: the maximum force in tons should be eight to ten times the shaft diameter in inches. On that basis a 10-ton puller suits shafts up to roughly one inch in diameter, so a larger shaft calls for the PHA-113 or PHA-116 class, and a puller that is too small should never be pushed past its rating. Reach falls as the spread increases, which means a wide hub may need the long-jaw or extra-long-jaw versions listed by the maker.

For assembly the jaw head is threaded to the cylinder collar, the lift plate is attached to the coupler end, a ram point is fitted into the plunger and a gauge is connected on the pump side. The hydraulic cylinder, pump, hose and gauge are separate hydraulic components; the maker quotes weight and length including the cylinder and lift plate. Never exceed 700 bar, never retighten the T-handle while pulling and cover the work with a protective blanket because the pulled part can break.
