Posi Lock PHA-113 25-Ton 3-Jaw Hydraulic Puller

The Posi Lock PHA-113 is the 25-ton, three-jaw member of the Posi Lock hydraulic puller line. It is aimed at larger motor, pump and gearbox shafts where a 10-ton tool runs out of capacity, and it keeps the same Safety Cage principle that holds the jaws square to the work.

Mid-range hydraulic pulling for larger shafts

At 25 tons (222 kN) the PHA-113 sits in the middle of the maker’s 5 to 50 ton range. Its 12-inch reach and 2.5 to 18 inch spread suit couplings, impellers, bearing inner rings and gear hubs on medium industrial rotating machinery.

The jaw tips are 1.25 inches wide and 13.72 inches long, wider than on the 10-ton models, so the contact patch against the pulled part is larger and the load is shared across more steel.

Sizing the pull and preparing the setup

Use the maker’s rule of thumb of 8 to 10 tons per inch of shaft diameter. A 25-ton unit corresponds to shafts of roughly two and a half to three inches; for a 5 inch shaft the instruction sheet shows a 50-ton ram, which is the PHA-116 class. Because reach shrinks as the jaws open, check both the spread and the remaining reach against the real component before you commit to the size.

Thread the cylinder fully into the jaw head, fit the lift plate with the supplied bolts, choose the ram point that gives the most contact with the shaft end, and seal the gauge adapter with tape. The cylinder, pump and hose are not part of the puller dimensions; the quoted 110 lb and 33.32 in. include the cylinder and lift plate. The PHES-113 variant adds an electric pump and cart for repeated work.

Inspection, cleaning and storage

The instruction sheet asks the user to inspect the puller for dents, cracks or excessive wear before each use and to replace damaged parts at once. After the job, clean the jaws, cage and T-handle thread and store the puller in a clean, dry place. Check every hose and fitting for kinks and leaks, and never touch a hose or fitting while pressure is in the system, because escaping oil can penetrate the skin.

A 25-ton puller stores a lot of energy: wear eye protection, keep hands clear of the jaw pinch points and cover the work area with a blanket in case the pulled part fractures.
