Posi Lock PH-100T 100-Ton 3-Jaw Hydraulic Puller

The Posi Lock PH-100T is a portable 100-ton, three-jaw hydraulic puller for the largest shaft-mounted components: turbine and generator couplings, main gearbox gears, large fan and pump hubs and heavy bearing assemblies. It is the biggest single-acting three-jaw puller in the Posi Lock line.

A 100-ton puller for very large shafts

A hundred tons is far beyond the reach of conventional workshop pullers. The PH-100T opens from 7.5 to 70 inches, reaches 50 inches along the shaft and carries jaws 53 inches long, so it can straddle large hubs while pulling from deep on the shaft.

The tool is a heavy piece of equipment at 1950 lb (885 kg) and 77 inches overall, and the maker’s manual describes a hoist and slide-roller arrangement so the puller can be positioned and kept vertical or horizontal on the machine.

Planning a 100-ton pull

Use the sizing rule from the Posi Lock range: tons of force of about 8 to 10 times the shaft diameter in inches, which puts a 100-ton puller in the territory of shafts around ten inches. Always align the puller with the shaft, select the appropriate ram extender, and use a gauge in every hydraulic circuit to show the actual load.

The manual also asks the user to keep the slide rollers and mast clean and lubricated, to place the puller in its lowest position with ram extenders removed when it is moved, and to leave the hoist control valve closed when the vertical position is not being adjusted. A small amount of oil seepage from the hoist cylinder breather vent is described as normal.

Safety, support and lifting

Nobody should stand on, under or near the puller while it is in use. Support the part being pulled separately, cover the work with a protective blanket and keep hands, feet and clothing away from moving parts. Never use the puller to lift or support a load, and never connect or disconnect couplings under pressure. Because a 100-ton pull stores a great deal of energy, brief the crew before starting, agree who watches the gauge, and keep everyone clear of the line of pull until the load is released.
