How the PLT-SEC-T3-BE-FM-PT works

The PLT-SEC-T3-BE-FM-PT belongs to the PLT-SEC series, in which a surge protective plug is inserted into a base element that holds the terminals and the remote-indication contact. When a voltage spike on the line exceeds the protection level, the protective components in the plug conduct and limit the voltage across the connected equipment; the datasheet gives the voltage protection level Up and the residual voltages for different discharge currents. Pulling the plug out removes the protection without disturbing the wiring, which is useful for replacement or insulation tests. A status indicator on the plug and a changeover contact in the base signal when the protection has been used up.

The base is rated for 240 V AC (maximum continuous 264 V AC, 240 V DC), 26 A at 30 degrees C and 10 kA AC short-circuit. The datasheet notes that the maximum branch fuse and the DC short-circuit current depend on the plug used, with up to 5 kA DC.

Where the PLT-SEC-T3-BE-FM-PT fits in a system

Surge protectors of Type 3 (and the combined Type 2/3 variants) are installed near the equipment they protect, after the Type 1 and Type 2 stages at the building entrance and the distribution board. They limit the residual voltage that reaches electronics such as power supplies, PLC modules and communication devices. The series comes with different plugs for 24, 120 and 230 V, and with screw (UT) or push-in (PT) terminals, so the correct plug must be matched to the line voltage.

Order the PLT-SEC-T3-BE-FM-PT when you need a spare base, or when you buy plugs separately for a new cabinet. The plug alone does not give protection without a base, and the plug voltage must match the line.

Selection and ordering checklist

  • Match the nominal voltage of the plug to the line: the PLT-SEC-T3-BE-FM-PT is rated as shown in the table.
  • Check the mains system (TN-S or TT) listed for the device.
  • Confirm the load current is within the rated load current IL.
  • Confirm the backup fuse size for through wiring against the limit in the table.
  • Choose screw (UT) or push-in (PT) terminals to suit the wiring standard in your panel.
  • Plan whether the remote-indication contact will be connected to a controller.
  • Order the matching protective plug for your line voltage separately.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance of the PLT-SEC-T3-BE-FM-PT

Clip the PLT-SEC-T3-BE-FM-PT on a 35 mm DIN rail and connect line and neutral through the terminals (through wiring) or in branch wiring as the datasheet shows. Ground the PE terminal with a short, low-impedance conductor, because lead length adds to the let-through voltage during a surge. Keep the wiring from the protective device to the protected equipment short, and check the status indicator at each service visit.

Note that this item does not include the surge components. Protective plugs for 24, 120 and 230 V are separate items.

Typical applications in Oman and the GCC

In Oman and the GCC, thunderstorms are less frequent than in many regions but switching transients, long overhead lines and generator sets all create surges. Protectors are common in telecom shelters, solar plants, oil and gas instrument cabinets and power-plant auxiliaries.

Maintenance stores in GCC plants keep base elements and plugs separately so that a used plug can be replaced quickly.

About brand

Phoenix Contact is a German, family-owned manufacturer of electrical connection technology and industrial automation, founded in 1923 in Essen by Hugo Knümann. It began as a sales company, and in 1928 Knümann developed the modular terminal block mounted on a rail, the product the company is still best known for. Phoenix Contact is headquartered in Blomberg, North Rhine-Westphalia.

Seven Star LLC lists Phoenix Contact surge protection, power supplies and safety relays, and sources these components by order number for panel builders and maintenance teams in Oman.

Ordering Phoenix Contact components: what we need

Phoenix Contact items are ordered by a seven-digit order number together with the type designation, both printed on the side of the module. Send both, plus the quantity. If the number is unreadable, send the type text and a photo. For power supplies, state input voltage, output current and whether the unit runs in parallel or with a redundancy module. For buyers in the GCC replacing an older unit, we check the manufacturer's documentation for the listed successor type.
