MTL 5043 – Repeater Power Supply, Dual Output (4–20 mA)

Description

Overview

The MTL 5043 (MTL5043) is a one-channel repeater power supply with dual output from the MTL 5000 Series. It supplies a fully floating DC supply to a conventional 2-wire 4/20 mA smart transmitter located in a hazardous area and repeats the transmitter current into two separate floating circuits in the safe area. It is an intrinsically safe isolating interface for analogue inputs, not an analogue output isolator.

Seven Star LLC supplies the MTL 5043 and other MTL 5000 Series modules to process industries across Oman and the GCC.

What the MTL5043 Is: A Dual-Output Repeater Power Supply for 2-Wire Transmitters

MTL describes the MTL5043 as a repeater power supply. The module sits in the safe area, provides a fully floating DC supply to one conventional 2-wire 4/20 mA smart transmitter located in the hazardous area, and repeats the transmitter current into two separate floating safe-area circuits. In control-system terms it is an analogue input interface with a signal splitter built in: one field transmitter and two receivers, for example a DCS input card and an independent recorder or shutdown system.

The transmitter may be installed in Zone 0, gas group IIC, temperature class T4 to T6, or a Division 1 Group A location, provided the transmitter itself is suitably certified. The module makes 15.5 V available to the transmitter at 20 mA and accepts 0 to 24 mA including over-range. The intrinsic safety description is Uo 28 V, Io 93 mA, Po 0.65 W with Um 253 V rms, and these values are what must be matched against the transmitter certificate and cable parameters during loop design.

Both outputs deliver 4 to 20 mA. Channel 1 drives 0 to 350 Ω on terminals 11 and 12, or 0 to 130 Ω when wired through terminal 10, which inserts a 220 Ω series resistor for HART applications. Channel 2 drives 0 to 550 Ω and can alternatively be used as a passive current sink (terminal 7) into 1 kΩ at up to 30 V. Transfer accuracy is better than 20 µA at 20 °C with drift below 0.5 µA per °C.

MTL5043 Terminals, HART Behaviour and Certificate Versions

Terminal allocation is fixed: 1 and 2 are the hazardous-area input (negative and positive), 7 is the channel 2 passive current sink negative, 8 and 9 are the channel 2 active output, 10 is channel 1 positive through the 220 Ω HART resistor, 11 and 12 are channel 1 negative and positive, and 13 and 14 take the 20 to 35 V DC supply. A green LED shows power. With both outputs at 20 mA the unit draws 100 mA at 24 V and dissipates up to 1.7 W, figures worth using when sizing cabinet supplies and heat load.

HART communication is passed in both directions on channel 1 only, so a handheld communicator or asset management multiplexer has to be connected on that output. MTL also warns that hardware differs by certificate: modules marked Baseefa 03ATEX0584 pass HART and meet the published specification, whereas older modules carrying BAS01ATEX7154 or Ex97D2248 do not pass HART and have neither the current sink on terminal 7 nor the 220 Ω resistor on terminal 10. For replacement purchases the certificate number on the label should be checked.

Industrial Applications

The MTL 5043 is used in oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical, power generation and water treatment plants wherever a 2-wire transmitter in a hazardous area has to be powered from the safe area and its 4 to 20 mA signal is needed in two places at once, for example by a control system and by a separate recorder or shutdown system.

Across Oman, Muscat, Sohar, Salalah and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies genuine MTL isolating interface modules to process industry operators.

About brand

On a hazardous-area loop drawing, the box between the field instrument and the DCS card very often carries an MTL part number. MTL was founded in 1971 in Luton, United Kingdom, and built its name on intrinsic safety interfaces and surge protection. Seven Star LLC lists MTL isolators, a fieldbus barrier and the configuration tools for them, and supplies MTL (Eaton) barriers and spare modules to sites in Oman as an independent supplier.

MTL product families listed here

Most of the listed items are DIN-rail galvanic isolators. The MTL5541 repeater power supply and the MTL5576-THC temperature converter belong to the MTL5500 range, and the MTL 5043 repeater power supply comes from the earlier MTL5000 range that many plants still run. The MTL 9370-FB2 is a fieldbus barrier for intrinsically safe FOUNDATION fieldbus spurs. PCS45 software with the PCL45USB link is the configurator for MTL converter modules. For the listed part CPM08-BN, please send a label photo so the number can be matched to the manufacturer's records. Newer labels show Eaton MTL, older ones Measurement Technology Ltd, and the module numbers are the same. The MTL 9608 is a fieldbus junction box with eight spur outlets plus a trunk-in connection, listed under the Crouse-Hinds series part number FCS-9608.

Where MTL barriers and isolators are used

These interfaces sit in marshalling cabinets wherever instruments are located in Zone 0, 1 or 2 areas: gas plants, refineries, offshore platforms, tank farms and chemical units across the GCC. They power 2-wire transmitters, pass HART, convert thermocouple signals and drive solenoids or alarms while limiting energy to the field circuit.

Ordering MTL modules: what we need

Send the full module number including every suffix, for example MTL5576-THC and not just MTL5576, and the quantity. Tell us if the module mounts on DIN rail or on a backplane, because MTL5500 and MTL4500 parts are not interchangeable. For a fieldbus barrier give the number of spurs and the enclosure reference. A photo of the side label, which shows the certificate numbers, helps when the certificate for your project file must match.
