Selecting the right variant
It is a practical answer for monitoring diesel engines, gensets and compressors in power and oil and gas sites from standard SCADA systems.

For wiring and sizing, the J1939 side is one CAN port on a spring-type Euroblock terminal, selectable at 250 kbps, 500 kbps or 1 Mbps, with a 120 ohm terminator and 2 kV isolation. The datasheet lists up to 256 J1939 commands and 2048 bytes of input and output data. On the Ethernet side, EtherNet/IP works as scanner or adapter (four adapter connections) and PROFINET as an IO device with 512 bytes each way. Check the engine controller baud rate and the parameter groups you need before commissioning, and terminate the CAN bus only at its two physical ends.

The choice between switch types follows the network. An unmanaged switch simply forwards traffic and suits a small, isolated panel. A managed switch adds redundancy protocols (Moxa's Turbo Ring recovers a broken ring in milliseconds), VLANs to separate traffic, port mirroring and alarms, which a SCADA or DCS network needs. The suffix on a Moxa model also matters: "-T" means a wide operating temperature range (typically -40 to 75 °C), which is the safe choice for outdoor cabinets in the Gulf summer. "-MM-SC" or "-S-SC" means multi-mode or single-mode fibre with SC connectors.
