Moxa EDS-P206A-4PoE 6-Port Unmanaged Switch with 4 PoE Ports

Description

What the EDS-P206A-4PoE does on the plant network

Moxa describes the EDS-P206A-4PoE as unmanaged Ethernet switch with 2 10/100BaseT(X) ports,4 PoE ports, -10 to 60°C operating temperature. This unmanaged switch combines two 10/100 uplink or device ports with four IEEE 802.3af/at PoE+ ports, so cameras, wireless access points and IP phones can be powered over the same cable.

On the datasheet side, the power input is 12/24/48 VDC; Redundant dual inputs; operating temperature is -10 to 60°C (14 to 140°F); dimensions are 50.3 x 114 x 70 mm (1.98 x 4.53 x 2.76 in); weight is 375 g (0.83 lb); the enclosure is rated IP30.

Standards and approvals printed for this model include safety standard UL 508. Approvals can differ between variants of a series, so check the one on the exact order code.

Selection and installation notes

In a pumping station, tank farm or perimeter fence application it removes the need for local mains supplies at each camera. Fiber models in the series provide a long-distance uplink.

On the practical side, mounting is listed as din-rail mounting; wall mounting (with optional kit); the housing is metal; the stated MTBF is 1,398,743 hrs; the warranty period is 5 years. Treat the MTBF as a manufacturer prediction under its stated method, not a guarantee for your site.

Please check the total PoE budget against the connected devices, the 24 or 48 VDC supply, and the copper or fiber uplink variant before you place an order. Seven Star LLC supplies as an independent company and prices against the precise code requested.

Suffixes such as -T generally mark wide-temperature versions and fiber suffixes (M, S, MM, SS with SC or ST) mark the connector and fiber type, but the order code printed on the datasheet governs.

Working out the PoE power budget

A PoE switch can only deliver what its own supply provides, so the power budget is the first check when the EDS-P206A-4PoE is planned. List the devices that will be connected to the four PoE ports, find the power class or maximum consumption of each in its datasheet, and add them up. Cameras with heaters, infrared illuminators or pan-tilt motors can draw much more in the evening or in cold weather than in normal daytime use, and wireless access points draw more under heavy traffic. Compare the total with the PoE budget in the Moxa datasheet for this switch and with the rating of the DC power supply that will feed it, leaving a margin. The input current figure in the table above shows why the supply has to be sized for the PoE load and not only for the switch.

Installation in field cabinets

The switch is intended for mounting inside an enclosure, since its housing is rated IP30. Mount it on the DIN rail with enough space above and below for air to move, and keep it away from heaters, transformers and drives that raise the local temperature. In Oman, outdoor cabinets for CCTV and access control often stand in direct sun, so the internal temperature can exceed the outside air by a wide margin; a sun shield, a light-coloured cabinet or ventilation can keep the switch within the -10 to 60 deg C operating range. Use the redundant dual power inputs where the application justifies it, feeding them from separate supplies so that a single supply failure does not drop all the cameras.

Cabling and earthing

Use good-quality copper Ethernet cable, keep runs within the Ethernet distance limit, and avoid routing data cables alongside power cables over long distances. Earth the switch and the cabinet as described in the Moxa installation guide, and use surge protection on cables that leave the building or run to poles, since long outdoor runs are exposed to induced surges.

Commissioning and routine checks

Because the switch is unmanaged, there is no configuration to load, but the commissioning checks still matter. Confirm that each powered device starts up and links at the expected speed, check the PoE and link LEDs on every port, and leave the system running under full load for a period to make sure the supply copes. During maintenance visits, clean dust from the cabinet filters, look for discoloured terminals on the power input, and check that cable connectors are firmly seated.

About brand

Since 1987 Moxa, based in New Taipei City, Taiwan, has built networking hardware for places where an office switch would fail: substations, wellhead panels, roadside cabinets. Seven Star LLC lists Moxa industrial Ethernet switches and fiber converters and supplies Moxa networking devices to system integrators and plant teams in Oman as an independent supplier. Each request is checked against the full Moxa model name before we quote.

The EDS-G508E is a managed switch with eight Gigabit ports from the EDS managed line. The EDS-316-MM-SC-T is a 16-port unmanaged switch with 14 copper ports, two multi-mode SC fiber ports and the wide-temperature option (-40 to 75 C). The TCF-142-S-SC-T belongs to the TCF-142 series, which converts RS-232/422/485 serial signals to single-mode fiber. Moxa also makes serial device servers, protocol gateways, wireless devices and industrial computers, used on SCADA and telemetry networks across the GCC.

This unmanaged switch combines two 10/100 uplink or device ports with four IEEE 802.3af/at PoE+ ports, so cameras, wireless access points and IP phones can be powered over the same cable.
What power supply does the EDS-P206A-4PoE need?
The Moxa specification gives an input voltage of 12/24/48 VDC; Redundant dual inputs. Check the terminal arrangement and, where relevant, the redundant-input wiring against your panel supply before ordering.
What operating temperature range applies to the EDS-P206A-4PoE?
The listed operating temperature is -10 to 60°C (14 to 140°F). Wide-temperature versions carry a -T suffix in Moxa's order codes where the series offers them, and they are separate order codes.
Does the EDS-P206A-4PoE need configuration?
It is an unmanaged switch: ports auto-negotiate speed and crossover, so it works as plug-and-play without software configuration, and any alarm or switch functions are set on the unit itself.
Where is the EDS-P206A-4PoE datasheet and how do I ask for a quotation?
