Moxa TCC-80 RS-232 to RS-422/485 Port-Powered Converter

Description

RS-232 to RS-422/485 conversion without a power supply

The Moxa TCC-80 is a compact converter that changes RS-232 signals to RS-422 or RS-485 (2-wire or 4-wire) and back. Its distinguishing feature is port power: the unit takes its energy from the RS-232 TxD, RTS and DTR lines of the host, so no separate adapter is normally needed. RS-485 direction is handled by automatic data direction control, so no software has to switch the driver, and automatic baud-rate detection, built-in 120 ohm terminators and an LED power indicator simplify commissioning. It is a typical fix for linking a PC or a legacy RS-232 controller to a long RS-485 multidrop line with meters, drives or analysers.

Technical specifications

Parameter Specification
Serial interface 2 ports: RS-232 on DB9 female; RS-422/485 on terminal block (TCC-80) or DB9 male (TCC-80-DB9)
Signals RS-232: TxD, RxD, GND (handshake pins internally shorted); RS-422/RS-485-4w: Tx+, Tx-, Rx+, Rx-, GND; RS-485-2w: Data+, Data-, GND

TCC-80 variants

Model Isolation RS-422/485 connector
TCC-80 No Terminal block
TCC-80I Yes (optical, photo coupler) Terminal block
TCC-80-DB9 No DB9 male
TCC-80I-DB9 Yes (optical, photo coupler) DB9 male

The isolated I versions use a photo coupler to separate the two sides, which helps against ground loops. The datasheet quotes the isolation level in two places with different figures (2.5 kV and 2 kV), so confirm the value with the manufacturer if it matters for your design.

Power budget and installation

Port power is limited. A standard PC COM port can provide 70 to 90 mW when TxD, RTS and DTR are connected, while the converter needs about 50 mW, so keep the RS-232 cable shorter than 15 m at 9600 bps. A built-in test mode lights the power LED when the serial device supplies enough power; if not, use the 5 to 12 VDC jack or the USB power cord. For DIN-rail, multi-drop or isolated installations in cabinets, the Moxa TCF-142-S-SC-T (serial over fibre) or the TCC-120 RS-422/485 repeater may suit better. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, quotes the exact variant; state whether you need terminal-block or DB9 and isolated or non-isolated before ordering. The datasheet (version 1.7) is attached, and related products are in Industrial Communications. The TCC-80 is a desktop unit with a plastic top cover and metal base plate and is not meant for DIN-rail mounting; for a cabinet-mounted repeater see the TCC-120. The RS-232 handshake pins (DTR, DSR, DCD, CTS, RTS) are shorted internally, so flow control is not available through the converter. It tolerates 0 to 60 deg C, so it is best kept inside a control room or cabinet.

About brand

Since 1987 Moxa, based in New Taipei City, Taiwan, has built networking hardware for places where an office switch would fail: substations, wellhead panels, roadside cabinets. Seven Star LLC lists Moxa industrial Ethernet switches and fiber converters and supplies Moxa networking devices to system integrators and plant teams in Oman as an independent supplier. Each request is checked against the full Moxa model name before we quote.

Moxa switches and converters listed here

The EDS-G508E is a managed switch with eight Gigabit ports from the EDS managed line. The EDS-316-MM-SC-T is a 16-port unmanaged switch with 14 copper ports, two multi-mode SC fiber ports and the wide-temperature option (-40 to 75 C). The TCF-142-S-SC-T belongs to the TCF-142 series, which converts RS-232/422/485 serial signals to single-mode fiber. Moxa also makes serial device servers, protocol gateways, wireless devices and industrial computers, used on SCADA and telemetry networks across the GCC.

Ordering Moxa devices: what we need

The suffixes carry the specification. Send the complete model name, including fiber mode and connector (MM-SC, SS-SC, ST), the -T wide-temperature suffix and any coating or approval suffix. Add the power supply voltage, the SFP modules needed and the quantity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the TCC-80 need an external power supply?
Not normally; it draws power from the RS-232 TxD, RTS and DTR lines, with an optional 5 to 12 VDC input.
What does it convert?
RS-232 to RS-422 and to 2-wire or 4-wire RS-485.
What baud rates are supported?
300 bps to 115.2 kbps, with automatic baud-rate detection.
Which TCC-80 models are isolated?
TCC-80I and TCC-80I-DB9.
How long can the RS-232 cable be?
Moxa advises under 15 m at 9600 bps so enough port power reaches the converter.
