A fanless 28-port Gigabit backbone for rack rooms and substations

The Moxa ICS-G7528A series is a rack-mount Layer 2 managed switch with 24 Gigabit ports and four 10 Gigabit SFP+ slots, up to 28 optical connections in all. It is fanless, runs from -40 to 75 deg C, and has isolated redundant 100 to 240 VAC power inputs, which suits control rooms, pumping-station backbones and transportation networks where large volumes of data, voice and video are aggregated. Turbo Ring and Turbo Chain recover in under 20 ms at 250 switches (under 50 ms when the ring speed is 1 Gbit/s or higher), and MSTP, MRP and V-ON are available. Security covers ACLs, RADIUS, TACACS+, IEEE 802.1X, sticky MAC and MAB authentication.

The suffix HV-HV-T means two high-voltage AC inputs and the wide-temperature range. Choose the copper-heavy model where many devices connect directly and the 20GSFP model for fibre-only backbones.

Planning notes

Count the fibre links first: every optical port needs an SFP module, and 10G ports need SFP+ modules of the correct reach. The package includes rack ears, port caps, a USB console cable and EU and US power cords. For small cabinets with 12/24/48 VDC supply, a DIN-rail unit such as the Moxa EDS-G508E is more suitable. The ICS-G7528A is a Layer 2 platform: routing is not listed, so if the design needs inter-VLAN routing, plan a separate Layer 3 device.
