Description
An advanced Modbus gateway for SCADA with many masters
The Moxa MGate MB3170 is a one-port Modbus gateway that converts between Modbus TCP and Modbus RTU/ASCII. Up to 32 TCP masters can access the serial side, each with 32 buffered requests, or the unit can act as a master to as many as 32 Modbus TCP servers. It reaches up to 31 serial slaves per port (62 on the two-port MB3270). Routing can be by slave ID, TCP port or IP address, and Auto Device Routing builds the slave ID table with one click. Priority control forces urgent commands through ahead of normal polling, and embedded traffic monitoring helps troubleshooting. A serial redirector lets a serial master keep direct access to slaves while TCP masters share the same bus.

Add -T for the -40 to 75 deg C versions. Fibre models reach 4 km (multi-mode) or 40 km (single-mode) typical.
Selection and quotation
Use the MB3170 or MB3270 when several SCADA or historian masters poll the same serial devices, or when urgent commands need priority. If you need a simpler and cheaper standard gateway, compare the MB3180. Gateways do not change Modbus register maps, so confirm slave addresses and timeouts with the device manuals. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, quotes the exact order code; state port count, isolation, fibre type and temperature range before ordering. The second Ethernet port provides built-in cascading, so a neighbouring gateway or device can be daisy-chained without an extra switch port. Emergency request tunnels reserve bandwidth for urgent requests, and embedded Modbus traffic monitoring supports troubleshooting. Fibre models are immune to electromagnetic noise and suit sites with high ground-loop voltages, and Moxa notes that fibre has no sparking risk in hazardous environments.

The EDS-G508E is a managed switch with eight Gigabit ports from the EDS managed line. The EDS-316-MM-SC-T is a 16-port unmanaged switch with 14 copper ports, two multi-mode SC fiber ports and the wide-temperature option (-40 to 75 C). The TCF-142-S-SC-T belongs to the TCF-142 series, which converts RS-232/422/485 serial signals to single-mode fiber.
