Brand:

Moxa NPort 5210A 2-Port RS-232 Serial Device Server

Description

Two RS-232 ports on one network address, with dual power inputs

The Moxa NPort 5210A is a two-port RS-232 serial device server that connects two serial devices to a 10/100 Ethernet network. It gives PC software direct access to each port through Real COM or TTY drivers, or exposes the ports to host applications in TCP Server, TCP Client or UDP mode. Compared with a one-port unit it adds COM port grouping, which lets one application write to several physical ports at once, and dual DC power inputs, a power jack and a removable terminal block, so that two supplies can be connected. Surge protection on the serial, Ethernet and power lines is tested to IEC 61000-4-5, and a three-step web console is used for setup.

Model Serial standard Connector
NPort 5210A / -T 2 x RS-232 DB9 male
NPort 5230A / -T 2 x RS-422/485 5-pin terminal block
NPort 5250A / -T 2 x RS-232/422/485 DB9 male

The -T versions work from -40 to 75 deg C. Regional power adapters are supplied with the standard models.

Selection and use

Use the 5210A where both devices are RS-232, for example two meters or a PLC programming port and a printer. RS-485 field buses need the 5230A or 5250A, which include automatic data direction control. The single-port NPort 5110A is cheaper per port but has one connection only, and units with four ports are covered by the NPort 5400 range. Keep each serial cable short at high baud rates and make sure the device and the NPort use the same data format. Restrict the web console with a password and fixed IP. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, quotes the exact model; confirm serial standard, connector type and temperature range before ordering. The datasheet (version 1.11) is attached, and related products are in Industrial Communications. The datasheet lists immunity levels such as 8 kV contact ESD, 2 kV power surge and 1 kV signal surge, which you can compare with the site specification. The two ports are independent, so each can use a different mode, baud rate and parity. Both power sources can be connected together; the unit remains powered if one fails, and the watchdog timer reboots it automatically if firmware hangs.

How the Moxa NPort 5210A works

The NPort 5210A links serial devices to an Ethernet network. Each serial port gets a network address and port number. In Real COM mode a driver on the PC creates virtual COM ports, so old serial software keeps working as if the device were plugged in directly. In TCP or UDP modes, host programs open a socket to the port instead. The unit passes the data in both directions and keeps the serial settings you set.

Where the NPort 5210A is used

  • PLCs and meters with RS-232 ports
  • Barcode readers and scales
  • Instruments in plant networks

About brand

Since 1987 Moxa, based in New Taipei City, Taiwan, has built networking hardware for places where an office switch would fail: substations, wellhead panels, roadside cabinets. Seven Star LLC lists Moxa industrial Ethernet switches and fiber converters and supplies Moxa networking devices to system integrators and plant teams in Oman as an independent supplier. Each request is checked against the full Moxa model name before we quote.

Moxa switches and converters listed here

The EDS-G508E is a managed switch with eight Gigabit ports from the EDS managed line. The EDS-316-MM-SC-T is a 16-port unmanaged switch with 14 copper ports, two multi-mode SC fiber ports and the wide-temperature option (-40 to 75 C). The TCF-142-S-SC-T belongs to the TCF-142 series, which converts RS-232/422/485 serial signals to single-mode fiber. Moxa also makes serial device servers, protocol gateways, wireless devices and industrial computers, used on SCADA and telemetry networks across the GCC.
