MikroTik RB5009UG+S+IN Quad-Core 10G Router

Description

A compact quad-core router with a 10G SFP+ uplink

The RB5009UG+S+IN is a metal-cased desktop router with seven gigabit Ethernet ports, one 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet port, one 10G SFP+ cage and a full-size USB 3.0 port. MikroTik built it for heavy-duty home lab and branch use: all ports connect to a Marvell 88E6393 Amethyst-family switch chip with a 10 Gbps full-duplex link to the CPU.

The CPU is a Marvell Armada 88F7040 quad-core ARMv8 at up to 1.4 GHz, with 1 GB DDR4 RAM and 1 GB NAND, running RouterOS v7 only. The CPU and switch chip sit on the bottom of the board so the case acts as a heatsink, and cooling is passive. The unit measures 220 x 125 x 22 mm.

The product page gives these measured results (88F7040 all port test); method is RFC2544 with Xena equipment and 0.1% loss tolerance:

Test Rules Mbps at 1518 B Mbps at 512 B Mbps at 64 B
Bridging none (fast path) 9851.4 9551.9 3138
Routing none (fast path) 9851.4 9551.9 2703.3
Routing 25 ip filter rules 9365.6 3096.2 414

Reading the numbers: the table shows a router that holds close to line rate on a 10G path. Bridging and routing in the fast path reach 9851.4 Mbps at 1518 bytes, and 25 IP filter rules still allow 9365.6 Mbps at that size, but small 64-byte packets with the same rules fall to 414 Mbps. For a branch gateway with a 1G or 2.5G internet link there is a large margin; the CPU becomes the limit only when many firewall rules, queues or VPN tunnels process small packets at high rates.

Ports, switch chip and power inputs

  • Seven 10/100/1000 ports, one 2.5G port, one SFP+ cage and USB 3.0 type A (1.5 A maximum, with USB power reset).
  • Three power paths: PoE-in on Ether1 (802.3af/at), DC jack, and a 2-pin terminal (5.08 mm), all 24-57 V.
  • Maximum consumption 25 W; 14 W without attachments.
  • Passive cooling and a tested ambient range of -40 to 60 degrees C according to the product page.
  • Four units can be mounted in a single 1U space with the optional rack-mount kit K-79.

Ordering notes and rack option

The code RB5009UG+S+IN reads: UG = USB 3.0 and gigabit ports, S = SFP+, IN = indoor case. The package includes a 24 V 1.5 A power adapter and screw kit. The rack-mount kit K-79 is an optional accessory, and the SFP+ module is not included. MikroTik states the RB5009 doubles performance compared with its own similar-size products in CPU-heavy configurations, but throughput depends on the configuration, so size the router against the measured table above.

Setup and powering

Choose one of the three power inputs; PoE-in must supply 24-57 V. The quick guide asks for RouterOS v7.10 or later for compliance with local regulations, requires professional installation and indoor use, and uses the same Ether1 first-boot procedure at 192.168.88.1 with the admin user. Set a password immediately after first login.

Branch offices, site cabins and labs

The device suits a branch or site office that needs a 2.5G LAN port, a 10G uplink to a switch and VPN termination in one box, and its passive cooling avoids fan wear in dusty rooms. The 24-57 V DC range allows powering from a telecom-type DC supply through the terminal block. For harsh outdoor cabinets, confirm enclosure temperature against the tested range first.

Information to send with an RFQ for the MikroTik RB5009UG+S+IN Quad-Core 10G Router

Network hardware is easier to quote correctly when the application is clear. For the MikroTik RB5009UG+S+IN Quad-Core 10G Router, tell us how many sites or users it will serve, the WAN connections at each site (fibre, DSL, LTE or microwave) and the throughput you expect with firewall and VPN rules active, because encrypted throughput is usually well below the headline routing figure.

  • Quantity, and whether spare units are needed for critical sites.
  • Power arrangement: included adapter, PoE input or DC supply from a site battery.
  • Optics: the SFP or SFP+ modules and fibre type, single-mode or multimode, if fibre ports will be used.
  • Mounting: desk, wall, DIN rail, pole or 19-inch rack, and any enclosure needed outdoors.

If the device is replacing existing equipment, the current configuration or a short description of the network layout helps confirm that the replacement supports the same features.
