Overview

The Hirschmann GRS1040, marketed as the GREYHOUND 1040, is a modular, fanless, managed Gigabit Ethernet switch in a 19-inch rack format from Hirschmann, a Belden brand. Each basic unit carries 12 fixed ports and two media module slots that add eight ports each, for up to 28 Gigabit ports per device, and it offers 2.5 Gigabit Ethernet SFP uplinks, up to 16 PoE/PoE+ ports and two power supplies that can be changed in the field. With HiOS Layer 2 or Layer 3 software, the Hirschmann GRS1040 can act as an aggregation or backbone switch in industrial networks that need to grow without being taken offline.

Operating Principle

The Hirschmann GRS1040 is a managed switch: it receives Ethernet frames on any port, looks up the destination in its address tables and forwards them only to the required port or VLAN, while applying quality-of-service, security and filtering rules. With the Layer 3 Advanced software level it can also route IPv4 traffic at full wire speed between VLANs and subnets using static routes, OSPFv2, RIP and VRRP, and handle multicast routing with PIM-DM, PIM-SM/SSM and DVMRP.

Availability of the Hirschmann GRS1040 comes from both hardware and protocols. Two hot-swappable power supplies let one unit be replaced while the other keeps the switch running, and media modules can be changed on a live network. On the protocol side, HiOS supports MRP to IEC 62439-2, RSTP, HIPER-Ring client, link aggregation with LACP, sub-ring management and redundant network coupling, so ring and mesh topologies recover quickly from a cable or device failure. Precision Time Protocol (PTPv2) transparent and boundary clock functions provide precise synchronisation for real-time applications.

Engineering Design of the Hirschmann GRS1040

Two basic unit types are defined. The Hirschmann GRS1040 GRS1042 places Ethernet ports on the front and the power input on the rear, with 2 × GE/2.5 GE SFP slots plus 10 × FE/GE TX ports as fixed ports. The GRS1142 places both ports and power on the rear, with 4 × GE/2.5 GE SFP slots, 2 × FE/GE SFP and 6 × FE/GE TX ports. Media modules (GMM) add up to eight FE/GE ports each in RJ45, SFP, SC or ST forms, allowing up to 22 fiber ports per switch, and PoE modules support up to 120 W per module and 180 W overall. Additional interfaces are a V.24 RJ45 console port, a 10/100 out-of-band management port, an SD slot for the ACA31 and a USB port for the ACA22 auto-configuration adapters.

The Hirschmann GRS1040 power supplies (GPS) are available for 24 to 48 VDC, 60 to 250 VDC and 110 to 240 VAC, or 48 to 54 VDC for PoE/PoE+. The basic unit draws 32 W with one supply, weighs 3.6 kg and measures 444 × 44 × 354 mm with IP30 protection. Temperature ranges of 0 to 60°C or −40 to +70°C can be ordered, with optional conformal coating. Depending on the approval code chosen in the configurator, units can carry EN 60950-1, EN 61131-2 and cUL60950-1 safety approvals, IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 for substations, and NEMA TS2, EN 50121-4 and EN 50155 for transportation.

Industrial Applications

Hirschmann designed the Hirschmann GRS1040 for physical security and video surveillance, transportation systems and electrical power applications, including new or retrofitted substations with IEC 61850-3 and IEEE 1613 approvals. In Oman these uses map to substation automation for transmission and distribution utilities, CCTV and access control backbones at ports, airports and industrial estates, and passenger information or traffic monitoring systems on highways, bridges and tunnels. In oil and gas plants, the Hirschmann GRS1040 serves as an aggregation layer for DIN-rail switches in field cabinets, connecting control system, CCTV and telecom networks in the central equipment room.

The Hirschmann GRS1040 works with the RSP family of rail switches, including RSPE, RSP, RSPL and RSPS, so a GREYHOUND rack unit can terminate redundant rings of DIN-rail switches from process areas.
