Brand:

Extech EX530A Heavy Duty True RMS Multimeter, 50000 Count

Description

EX530A is the top model of the Extech EX5xxA heavy duty industrial multimeters. It has a 50,000-count display, 0.06 percent basic accuracy, true RMS AC voltage and current to 1000 V and 10 A, a low impedance mode, a low pass filter, an IP67 waterproof and dustproof housing, a 2 m drop rating and a CAT IV 600 V safety rating.

A rugged high-resolution multimeter for the plant and the field

Where the EX505A and EX520A have 6000 counts, the EX530A offers 50,000 counts with a bar graph, giving finer resolution on DC voltage (0.01 mV) and current (0.01 microamp). Its double-moulded housing is IP67 rated, tested by Bureau Veritas according to the manual, and the meter survived 2 m drop tests, which suits workshop, outdoor and washdown areas.

LoZ mode (about 3 kilohm input) removes ghost voltage readings, and the low pass filter cleans readings on drive outputs. A 4 to 20 mA percentage mode reads loop current as a percentage of span with -25 to 125 percent display, which helps when checking transmitter loops.

Features stated in the datasheet and manual

  • 50,000-count backlit LCD with bar graph; 0.06 % basic accuracy.
  • 1000 V input protection on all functions; CAT IV-600 V and CAT III 1000 V ratings.
  • Complete with double-moulded test leads, magnetic hanging strap, Type K bead wire probe, carrying case and 9 V battery.
  • Three-year warranty; EX530A-NIST version listed with calibration.

Choosing between EX505A, EX520A and EX530A

The three models share the housing and safety ratings. The EX505A is 6000 counts with 0.5 % accuracy and 10 A; the EX520A is 6000 counts at 0.09 % with LoZ and low pass filter; the EX530A is 50,000 counts at 0.06 %. The datasheet also lists NIST versions and an EX505A-K kit.

The datasheet quotes 0.06 percent accuracy as a headline; the manual table shows 0.1 percent plus digits on the DC voltage 1000 V range, so check the range you plan to use.

Operating notes from the manual

Use the supplied leads rated CAT IV 600 V / CAT III 1000 V, keep within the maximum input of each function (600 V on resistance, capacitance, frequency and temperature) and do not exceed 800 mA on the microamp and milliamp ranges. The 10 A range is limited to 30 seconds with reduced accuracy.

The supplied thermocouple is rated for 250 C. Replace blown fuses only with 800 mA / 1000 V or 10 A / 1000 V ceramic fast blow types.

Typical uses in Gulf plants

General engineering note: an IP67 meter that can be dropped is useful for HVAC technicians, instrument technicians checking 4 to 20 mA loops, and electricians working in sandy, hot or wet locations such as desalination, outdoor substations and offshore support yards. Always follow the site permit-to-work rules.

Field use and calibration notes

Use the meter only within its stated safety category, and wear suitable protective equipment when working on live circuits. Check the test leads and probes before each use, and replace damaged leads at once. The waterproof and drop-rated housing suits outdoor and plant work in the region, but the meter should still be kept out of direct sun when not in use. Arrange calibration at regular intervals.

Store the meter in its case and replace the batteries as soon as the low battery indicator appears.
