Ecom Smart-Ex 203 Zone 2/22 5G Smartphone
Description
Overview
The Ecom Smart-Ex 203 is a 5G Android smartphone engineered for Zone 2/22 and Division 2 hazardous areas, sold under the order code SMART-EX203*. It extends the established Smart-Ex series from Ecom Instruments, part of the Pepperl+Fuchs Group, with a larger 6.3-inch display, a 48 MP rear camera, Wi-Fi 6E and an additional peripheral interface that accepts a clip-on barcode scanning module. The Ecom Smart-Ex 203 is aimed at the many plant areas classified as Zone 2, where an explosive atmosphere is not expected in normal operation but ordinary consumer phones are still not permitted, and where crews want a full-featured device for digital workflows, augmented reality and push-to-talk over cellular.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Ecom Smart-Ex 203 to energy, utilities and process industry customers in the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. As a trusted supplier offering engineering support in Muscat, we help IT, OT and HSE teams match the handset to their network operators, private LTE or 5G campus networks, and mobile device management platforms, and we supply the certificates that site approval processes require.
Operating Principle of the Ecom Smart-Ex 203
For Zone 2 and Division 2 duty the Ecom Smart-Ex 203 uses the protection concept Ex ic, intrinsic safety at the level appropriate to equipment protection level Gc and Dc. Energy in the battery, charging circuit, radios and interfaces is limited so that, under normal operation and specified faults, no spark or surface temperature can ignite the surrounding gas or dust. The ATEX and IECEx markings are Ex ic IIC T4 Gc for gas and Ex ic IIIC T135 °C Dc for dust, with an ambient range of −20 to +60 °C without the scanner module and −20 to +50 °C with it fitted.
The practical consequence is a handset that keeps the weight and slim profile of an industrial smartphone, 365 g and 17 mm thick, yet may be used inside Zone 2/22 areas of refineries, gas plants and chemical sites. In North America the device is listed for Class I Division 2 Groups A–D T4 and Class II Division 2 Groups F and G, as well as Class I Zone 2 AEx ic IIC T4 Gc, so international operators can apply one device standard across sites in different regulatory regimes.
Engineering Design of the Ecom Smart-Ex 203
The Ecom Smart-Ex 203 is built around a Qualcomm Dragonwing QCM4490 processor with 3GPP Release 16 support, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage, expandable with a microSD card of up to 512 GB. Its 6.3-inch FHD+ TFT display at 1080 × 2340 pixels is protected by Gorilla Glass 3, stays readable in sunlight and can be used with gloves or in rain. A 48 MP rear camera with autofocus and LED flash captures inspection evidence and documents, and a 16 MP front camera serves video calls and remote expert sessions. A version without camera is available for restricted sites.
Power comes from a replaceable 3.8 V, 4500 mAh, 17.1 Wh lithium-ion battery rated for a full working day. Besides USB-C, the Ecom Smart-Ex 203 has charging pads for docking stations and an additional interface for peripherals, which accepts the SM-Ex S203 SR scanning module based on the Zebra SE4107 engine for 1D and 2D barcodes. The housing is IP68 to EN/IEC 60529 and tested to MIL-STD-810H. A side fingerprint sensor provides biometric login, and a programmable push-to-talk and multifunction key can also act as an alarm button. Note that the phone is shipped without a charger; the scope of delivery covers the battery, USB cable, Torx T8 tool and documentation.
Key Features
Key capabilities of the Ecom Smart-Ex 203 drawn from the manufacturer datasheet and brochure include:

- Optional SM-Ex S203 SR clip-on scanner for fast 1D/2D barcode capture in warehouses and maintenance stores.
- Android 14 with Google Mobile Services, Android Enterprise Recommended status and ARCore certification.
- Security updates until March 2032, protecting the investment over a long fleet life cycle.
- Three-year service contract available, and integration into the Smart-Ex accessory concept.
Industrial Applications
Most of a typical refinery, gas processing plant or tank farm is classified Zone 2, so the Ecom Smart-Ex 203 covers a very large share of daily field activity: operator rounds, shift handovers, digital permits, photographs of leaks and corrosion, and calls to the control room. With the scanner module attached, warehouse and maintenance store staff can scan spare parts and asset tags without carrying a separate handheld computer. Its 5G and push-to-talk over cellular capability supports fast voice and video for remote expert assistance during turnarounds.
In Oman, the Ecom Smart-Ex 203 suits upstream production stations, the downstream and petrochemical complexes of the Sohar Industrial Port, the Duqm refinery area, power and desalination plants, and fuel distribution depots around Muscat and Salalah. Seven Star LLC works as a trusted supplier for these sites, offering engineering support in Muscat and helping customers combine the phone with accessories and with other hazardous area devices such as the Ecom Tab-Ex 03 DZ1 tablet. Buyers comparing Zone 2 handsets can also review the Smart-Ex 03 DZ2 smartphone, which is based on the Smart-Ex 03 platform.

About brand
Phones and tablets that may be carried into explosive atmospheres are the specialty of Ecom Instruments, founded in 1986 in Assamstadt, Germany. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists the Ecom Smart-Ex 03 DZ1 5G smartphone and the Ecom Tab-Ex 03 DZ1 tablet, both for Zone 1/21, and sources other Ecom intrinsically safe phones, tablets and handhelds on request.
Ecom devices listed here
The Smart-Ex 03 is a 5G smartphone and the Tab-Ex 03 is a tablet. The letters DZ1 in both names mark the version certified for Zone 1/21 areas. The manufacturer's current tablet listing features the Tab-Ex 05, so we confirm which tablet generation can be ordered.
Where Ecom mobile devices are used
Refineries, gas plants, chemical sites, tank farms and offshore platforms across the GCC issue these devices to operators and maintenance crews. The deciding factor is always the area classification. A device must carry a certificate that covers the zone, gas or dust group and temperature class of the place where it will be used.
Ordering Ecom devices: what we need
State the exact model and version (for example Smart-Ex 03 DZ1), the hazardous area classification, the certification scheme your site accepts, the regional network variant, and accessories such as chargers and spare batteries. Accessories for Ex devices are certified items too, so list them by part number where you can.
